The trial gets under way in London today of the man accused of murdering 87-year-old Irish man John Mackey last May.<\/p>\n
Originally from Callan in Co Kilkenny, Mr Mackey died after being attacked in north London while walking home from his local shop.<\/p>\n
Mr Mackey was a well-known member of the Irish community in north London where he lived most of his life.<\/p>\n
Last May, as he walked home after visiting his local supermarket and kebab shop, the pensioner was attacked and sustained head injuries.<\/p>\n
He died in hospital two days later.<\/p>\n
Mr Mackey, a devoted Arsenal fan, was described as a real gentleman by his family.<\/p>\n
Last month, 58-year-old Peter Augustine appeared before the Old Bailey via video link.<\/p>\n
He pleaded not guilty to the charges of murder and robbery.<\/p>\n
The court heard that a psychiatric defence will not be raised in the case.<\/p>\n
