Martin (Mattie) Canavan died on Friday, October 31 after being struck by a car on the N83 at Peake on the Tuam Road in Loughgeorge at around 11.30pm.<\/p>\n
He was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
His body was removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway for post-mortem examination.<\/p>\n
The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was brought to hospital for assessment on non-life-threatening injuries.<\/p>\n
The road was closed following the accident for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.<\/p>\n
Garda\u00ed are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them and are asking anyone with dash-cam footage to make it available.<\/p>\n
Mr Canavan\u2019s death notice states that he is pre-deceased by his parents Willie and Mary, his Infant brother and sister Gerard and Mary and his brothers Joe and Mickey.<\/p>\n
He is deeply regretted by his loving family, his brothers Johnny and Tom, his sisters-in-law Mary, Delia and Mary. He will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews Lorrane, Niall, Joanne, Nicola, Eunan and Lynn, his relatives, neighbours and friends.<\/p>\n
Following his death, tributes and condolences to Mr Canavan have been posted online, including from locals in social media community group Claregalway Info, with comments describing him as a \u201cpure gentleman\u201d and a \u201clovely man\u201d.<\/p>\n
One mourner on RIP.ie said: \u201cGrowing up he was my hero. Always bringing me to hurling and football matches.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I was an adult, he would call most days to see did I need help with any jobs but we would spend more time talking than working. Mattie, you were someone truly special and I will always cherish all the happy memories I have of you. Rest in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another said: \u201cThe village is without a wonderful, and knowledgeable man. From sport to everyday chat, [he was] not short of a word.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was a great neighbour and to many who were lucky enough, a great friend,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n
Mr Canavan\u2019s remains will repose at Corrandulla Mortuary Chapel on Tuesday, November 4 from 5pm, with removal at 7pm to the adjoining church.<\/p>\n
