\n\tMuch ado has been made about method acting<\/a> in recent years, also known simply as the Method, and three-time Best Actor Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis<\/a> would very much like to no longer be in the conversation.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe There Will Be Blood actor recently lamented being \u201cdrawn into this handbags-at-dawn conflict inadvertently\u201d after having worked with Brian Cox<\/a> on 1997\u2019s The Boxer, as the latter has often decried his Succession co-star Jeremy Strong\u2019s approach to immersive performance<\/a>. Given Day-Lewis\u2019s well-known reputation for embracing the Method and Strong\u2019s previous role as his assistant on 1989\u2019s My Left Foot, Day-Lewis said he\u2019s been unwittingly absorbed into the drama.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBrian is a very fine actor who\u2019s done extraordinary work. As a result,\u00a0he\u2019s been given a soapbox \u2026 which he shows no sign of climbing down from. Any time he wants to talk about it, I\u2019m easy to find,\u201d he told The Big Issue<\/a>. \u201cIf I thought during our work together I\u2019d interfered with his working process, I\u2019d be appalled. But I don\u2019t think it was like that. So I don\u2019t know where the fuck that came from. Jeremy Strong<\/a> is a very fine actor, I don\u2019t know how he goes about things, but I don\u2019t feel responsible in any way for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere, Day-Lewis reiterated his distaste for the misrepresentation of method acting, having previously defended the approach last month<\/a> and throughout recent press appearances.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey focus on, \u2018Oh, he lived in a jail cell for six months\u2019 [for 1993 film\u00a0In the Name of the Father]. Those are the least important details. In all the performing arts, people find their methods as a means to an end. It\u2019s with the intention of freeing yourself so you present your colleagues with a living, breathing human being they can interact with. It\u2019s very simple,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cSo it pisses me off this whole \u2018oh, he went full method\u2019 thing. What the fuck, you know? Because it\u2019s invariably attached to the idea of some kind of lunacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI choose to stay and splash around, rather than jump in and out or play practical jokes with whoopee cushions between takes or whatever people think is how you should behave as an actor,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n

\n\tDay-Lewis has been recently making the rounds for his turn in Anemone, the debut feature from his son, filmmaker Ronan Day-Lewis. The role marked a return to the silver screen for the semi-retired actor, who last starred in Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s Phantom Thread in 2017. Since then, he has described his previous characterization of the time off as \u201cgrandiose gibberish<\/a>.<\/a>\u201c<\/a> <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI never intended to retire, really. I just stopped doing that particular type of work so I could do some other work. Apparently, I\u2019ve been accused of retiring twice now. I never meant to retire from anything!
