The four big tech giants- \u2014Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon\u2014are expected to boost capital expenditures to $420 billion next fiscal year from $360 billion this year, according to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if such investments can pay off without destroying jobs, Hinton replied, \u201cI believe that it can\u2019t. He compared the potential risks of AI to a \u201cChernobyl moment,\u201d referring to the 1986 nuclear disaster in Ukraine that led to widespread radiation and casualties.<br \/>Hinton said the comparison shows how unregulated technological progress can trigger sudden and devastating effects on society. He warned that AI\u2019s risks go beyond the technology itself and are tied to how society is structured.<br \/>\u201cThe problem isn\u2019t AI \u2014 it\u2019s the way society is organised,\u201d Hinton said. \u201cPeople like Musk will get richer, while many others lose their jobs \u2014 and he won\u2019t care. It\u2019ll do tremendous good, and in fact if you think about it increasing productivity in many, many industries, that should be good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The problem ultimately is not owing to AI itself, but \u201con how we organize society,\u201d Hinton added. He also stressed the need for global cooperation to ensure that future superintelligent AI systems align with human values.<\/p>\n<p>Hinton\u2019s remarks come amid growing public concern about AI\u2019s social impact, as companies like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic compete to develop increasingly advanced models.
