Throughout its lifespan, the station has served as a test bed for scientific research in microgravity and has in years past opened itself up to private commercial missions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The orbital laboratory\u00a0is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/reference\/international-space-station\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:operated through a global partnership;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">operated through a global partnership<\/a> of space agencies, including NASA, Roscosmos, the European Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">More than 280 spacefarers from 26 countries have visited the International Space Station,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/international-space-station\/space-station-visitors-by-country\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:including 170 from the United States;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">including 170 from the United States<\/a>\u00a0alone, according to NASA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">About 356 feet long, the station is bigger than a six-bedroom house and has\u00a0six sleeping quarters, two bathrooms, a gym and a 360-degree view bay window. The space station also has enough docks for up to eight spacecraft to be docked at one time.<\/p>\n<p>What is the timeline for ending the ISS?<img alt=\"The International Space Station as seen in Nov. 2021 from astronauts aboard a SpaceX Dragon.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/daf473ea931315b19c32d2fbc309aaee.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The International Space Station as seen in Nov. 2021 from astronauts aboard a SpaceX Dragon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Decommissioning the aging cosmic outpost is the shared responsibility of the five nations whose space agencies have have operated it since 1998: the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada, NASA said in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/faqs-the-international-space-station-transition-plan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:explanation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">explanation<\/a>\u00a0of its transition plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">All of those nations have committed to supporting the International Space Station operations through 2030 with the exception of Russia, which has agreed to keep going only until 2028,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/spacestation\/2023\/04\/27\/partners-extend-international-space-station-for-benefit-of-humanity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to a 2023 blogpost from NASA;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">according to a 2023 blogpost from NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, a report from the Office of Inspector General report released in late 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2024\/11\/24\/the-international-space-station-is-limited-nasa-spacex-boeing-northrop-how-long-can-it-last\/76426102007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:questioned whether the space station could survive another five years;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">questioned whether the space station could survive another five years<\/a>, considering the structural issues it has experienced.<\/p>\n<p>How will NASA land the space station?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After deciding that the safest way to retire the ISS was through a controlled, targeted re-entry ending in a crash landing into a remote ocean, NASA began seeking proposals in 2023 from the private industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2025\/02\/20\/what-we-know-doge-elon-musk-calls-for-deorbiting-international-space-station-nasa-trump\/79317126007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:SpaceX was ultimately awarded the contract;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">SpaceX was ultimately awarded the contract<\/a>, meaning billionaire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/elon-musk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Elon Musk;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Elon Musk<\/a>&#8216;s company is now tasked with providing the vehicle that will deorbit the space station. The craft will need to be capable of performing a propulsive maneuver to line up the re-entry path into the desired uninhabited waters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Many of the space station&#8217;s modules and hardware are expected to burn up, melt away or vaporize upon re-entry.
