\n\tWe\u2019re just days away from the announcement of the nominations for the 68th annual Grammy Awards. The big reveal is set for Friday Nov. 7<\/a> at 11 a.m. ET\/ 8 a.m. PT. In recent days, we\u2019ve predicted the eight most likely nominees for best new artist <\/a>and album of the year<\/a>. Today, we turn our attention to record of the year, where we could see some history-making nominations.<\/p>\n

\n\tHUNTR\/X<\/a> and ROS\u00c9 could become the first K-pop artists to receive record of the year nods. HUNTR\/X is competing with \u201cGolden,\u201d the globe-conquering hit from KPop Demon Hunters; ROS\u00c9 with \u201cAPT.,\u201d her smash collab with Bruno Mars<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tKendrick Lamar<\/a> and SZA<\/a> are vying to become the first occasional duet partners to receive two record of the year nominations. They were nominated seven years ago for \u201cAll the Stars\u201d and are strong contenders this year for \u201cLuther.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDoechii\u2019s \u201cAnxiety\u201d could become the first single that prominently\u00a0samples a previous record of the year winner to be nominated in the category. Doechii\u2019s hit samples\u00a0\u201cSomebody That I Used to Know\u201d by\u00a0Gotye\u00a0featuring\u00a0Kimbra, which won the prize in 2013.<\/p>\n

\n\tLeon Thomas\u2019 \u201cMutt (Live From NPR\u2019s Tiny Desk)\u201d could become the first alternative version of a hit that was released in a previous eligibility year to receive a record of the year nomination.<\/p>\n

\n\tTo be sure, all of these things are not likely to happen. Some voters will dock \u201cAnxiety\u201d for leaning so heavily on a very well-known hit from the recent past.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd voters tend to bypass alternative versions of songs in this category. If the studio version of \u201cMutt\u201d had been eligible, it would almost certainly be nominated. Silk Sonic\u2019s \u201cLeave the Door Open\u201d won in this category (as well as song of the year) in 2022, showing the love many Grammy voters have for hits that evoke the glory of 1970s R&B. But many voters probably haven\u2019t heard the live version of \u201cMutt,\u201d and they may be reluctant to vote for something for record of the year that they haven\u2019t even heard.<\/p>\n

\n\tA few alternative versions have won awards in performance categories, including Adele\u2019s \u201cSet Fire to the Rain (Live)\u201d and Pharrell Williams\u2019 \u201cHappy (Live),\u201d both of which won for best pop solo performance, and Muni Long\u2019s \u201cMade for Me (Live on BET),\u201d which won earlier this year for best R&B performance. But to date no alternative version has been nominated for record of the year as a way of getting around the original version being ineligible. (Sam Smith\u2019s \u201cStay With Me (Darkchild Version),\u201d which won record of the year in 2015, was entered instead of the original version, which was released that same year.)<\/p>\n

\n\t(Lola Young\u2019s \u201cMessy\u201d and Gigi Perez\u2019s \u201cSailor Song\u201d were also released in the previous eligibility year, yet those original studio versions are entered for record of the year.)<\/p>\n

\n\tBillie Eilish may very well return to the finals with \u201cWildflower.\u201d It would be her sixth nod in this category in the past seven years. Like Eilish\u2019s previous single, \u201cBirds of a Feather,\u201d \u201cWildflower\u201d was a fixture on the Hot\u00a0100 for more than a year. But \u201cWildflower\u201d had a hard time emerging from the shadow of \u201cBirds of a Feather,\u201d which was nominated for record and song of the year and which Eilish and her brother\/collaborator FINNEAS performed on the Grammys in February.<\/p>\n

\n\tsombr is entered with \u201cBack to Friends.\u201d The 20-year-old is the sole writer and producer on this song, one of two concurrent hits from his debut album, I Barely Know Her. Such pros as Taylor Swift and Ryan Tedder have proclaimed that they are sombr fans.<\/p>\n

\n\tTyla\u2019s \u201cPush 2 Start\u201d is entered for both record of the year and best African music performance, a category she in which the South African singer won two years ago with \u201cWater.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAll eight likely album of the year nominees will get a close look in this category. Sabrina Carpenter<\/a>, Lady Gaga<\/a> and Lamar (with SZA) are also expected to be nominated for record of the year. The other five likely album of the year nominees may fall short in record of the year \u2013 Elton John & Brandi Carlile for \u201cWho Believes in Angels?,\u201d Tyler the Creator for \u201cSticky\u201d (featuring GloRilla, Sexyy Red & Lil Wayne); Clipse, Pusha T, Malice for \u201cBirds Don\u2019t Sing\u201d (featuring John Legend and Voices of Fire); The Weeknd for \u201cTimeless\u201d (featuring Playboi Carti); and Bad Bunny for either \u201cBaile Inolvidable\u201d or \u201cDtMF.\u201d (The fact that two Bunny records are entered for record of the year may mean Bunny will split his votes here. C\u2019mon, Team Bunny, that\u2019s Grammy 101 \u2013 Don\u2019t Compete With Yourself.)<\/p>\n

\n\tOther singles, not already mentioned, that are strong record of the year contenders include Gracie Abrams<\/a>\u2018 \u201cThat\u2019s So True,\u201d Chappell Roan<\/a>\u2018s \u201cThe Subway,\u201d Alex Warren<\/a>\u2018s \u201cOrdinary,\u201d Tate McRae\u2019s \u201cSports Car,\u201d Justin Bieber\u2019s \u201cDaisies,\u201d Ariana Grande\u2019s \u201ctwilight zone,\u201d Conan Gray\u2019s \u201cVodka Cranberry,\u201d Laufey\u2019s \u201cLover Girl,\u201d Jessie Murph\u2019s \u201cBlue Strips,\u201d Shaboozey\u2019s \u201cGood News\u201d and Teddy Swims\u2019 \u201cBad Dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n
