Now, he wants to give back \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe never thought we\u2019d miss you so much.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Aah, but they did. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Someone had to say something to staunch the soppiness. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Let\u2019s face it, it wouldn\u2019t have been a good look to mark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/richard-boyd-barrett\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/richard-boyd-barrett\/\">Richard Boyd<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/richard-boyd-barrett\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/richard-boyd-barrett\/\"> Barrett<\/a>\u2019s return to the D\u00e1il after getting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/31\/richard-boyd-barrett-given-all-clear-following-treatment-for-throat-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/31\/richard-boyd-barrett-given-all-clear-following-treatment-for-throat-cancer\/\">all-clear from cancer<\/a> by having him die of embarrassment on his first day back in the chamber. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After all the warm applause and with deputies still smiling over this happy outcome, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-healy-rae\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-healy-rae\/\">Michael Healy-Rae<\/a> interjected with a little tongue-in-cheek levity, allowing the Ceann Comhairle to gently steer business back to the normal hostilities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Everyone was delighted see RBB back in his usual place among his socialist comrades, eight months after taking leave to have treatment for throat cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The People Before Profit TD for D\u00fan Laoghaire is returning on a phased basis and, by the sounds of it, so is his famous foghorn delivery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ceann Comhairle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/verona-murphy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/verona-murphy\/\">Verona Murphy<\/a> was delighted to welcome him back, even if he can be one of her more difficult charges. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnd to be fair, deputy, everybody is absolutely thrilled to hear that your treatment went well. And you\u2019re looking so well.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Not strictly accurate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Richard was looking morto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMaybe you\u2019re somewhat quieter. We\u2019ll have to judge that as we go,\u201d laughed Verona, with the look of a woman who is not expecting a particularly long honeymoon period in this respect. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">With the Taoiseach away, Sinn Fein\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mary-lou-mcdonald\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mary-lou-mcdonald\/\">Mary Lou McDonald<\/a> sent in one of her boys to deal with whoever was standing in for him. The leader of the main opposition party wasn\u2019t going to give <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\">Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a>\u2019s second-in-command her precious time for two days in a row. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">David Cullinane deputised for her on Wednesday. And like every other person who spoke during Leaders\u2019 Questions, the first thing he did was welcome RBB.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s great news.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Miche\u00e1l\u2019s super-sub, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jack-chambers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jack-chambers\/\">Jack Chambers<\/a>, joined the congeniality chorus. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s wonderful to see you back, healthy and well,\u201d said the Minister for Public Expenditure, highlighting Richard\u2019s \u201cenormous candour and bravery\u201d in speaking publicly about his illness, something which will have helped a lot of people who are experiencing cancer in their own lives or that of a loved one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">RBB nodded modestly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Labour leader Ivana Bacik has suffered more than most from Boyd Barrett\u2019s booming contributions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI never thought I\u2019d say this,\u201d she began, turning to face the veteran ear-basher, \u201cbut I\u2019ve missed your voice in my left ear across the aisle.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He gave a bashful smile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Could things get any better? <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They certainly could for those in the House of a leftist persuasion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ivana was keen \u201cto acknowledge the wonderful election victories in the US overnight\u201d and, in particular, Zohran Mamdani\u2019s win in New York \u201cproving that voters want a message of hope\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Despite the genuinely happy vibes for RBB, the session served up the standard dispiriting back and forth over the cost-of-living crisis (Cullinane) and the housing crisis (Bacik).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If groundhogs had Groundhog Days, they would exist perpetually in the hamster wheel of Leaders\u2019 Questions.<\/p>\n<p>TD Richard Boyd-Barrett, speaking in the D\u00e1il for the first time since his own cancer treatment, has called for investment in linear accelerators. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/holly-cairns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/holly-cairns\/\">Holly Cairns<\/a>, the Social Democrats leader, did her best to switch things up by introducing a fresh topic while sticking to the theme of how bad things are under the Coalition. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">First, she had a big Soc Dems welcome for Richard. \u201cIt\u2019s really great to see you back.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More embarrassed smiles from RBB. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Then she turned her attention to Chambers of Commerce. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was a low-key opening for Holly.<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"\" class=\"c-stack b-it-article-body__pullquote\" data-style-direction=\"vertical\" data-style-justification=\"start\" data-style-alignment=\"unset\" data-style-inline=\"false\" data-style-wrap=\"nowrap\">\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">There must have been some worrying times during his cancer treatment<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMinister, we are hurtling towards a catastrophe!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She didn\u2019t have to tell that to Jack. He was well aware that the Fianna F\u00e1il parliamentary party meeting would be taking place later on in the evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Holly was talking about climate change. Plans to limit global warming have failed as temperatures continue to rise. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is an existential threat to our very existence on this planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It\u2019s very worrying. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister Chambers shared her concern. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But with all the work being done at Cop30 in Brazil (including by the Taoiseach) and all the work taking place at EU level, it isn\u2019t all doom and gloom. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Actually, said Jack, in an effort to lift the existential gloom, one only has to \u201clook at the work\u201d Environment and Transport Minister Darragh O\u2019Brien has done with his recent budget allocation and marvel at the amount of funding he has secured for his department. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Darragh is \u201call about trying to accelerate Ireland\u2019s energy transition and to underpin our journey to a net-zero future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Holly was deeply underwhelmed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI feel like I may be talking to the wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Whatever about talking to the wall, there must have been some worrying times during his cancer treatment when Richard Boyd Barrett wondered if he would ever be talking to the D\u00e1il. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But here he was, a bit leaner and with a huskier voice, rising to take the People Before Profit slot at Leaders\u2019 Questions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s good to be back. And particularly good to be back in the aftermath of the successful campaign of Catherine Connolly,\u201d he said, congratulating his fellow left-winger on her election as president. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The joyful news didn\u2019t stop there. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s also good to be back on the day that a socialist gets elected in New York: signs of hope and portents of the future.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The significance was not lost on his PBP colleague Ruth Coppinger. She also lauded \u201cthe election of a socialist in New York \u2013 you know, the belly of the beast of capitalism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When his turn came to speak, Richard thanked everyone, inside and outside Leinster House, for their kind words and messages before, during and after his treatment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMy biggest debt of gratitude is to the fantastic people who work in our health services, particularly the cancer services \u2013 in my case, St Luke\u2019s hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"\" class=\"c-stack b-it-article-body__pullquote\" data-style-direction=\"vertical\" data-style-justification=\"start\" data-style-alignment=\"unset\" data-style-inline=\"false\" data-style-wrap=\"nowrap\">\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">After the welter of warm welcomes, those last five words struck a chord<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Their expertise saved him. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Now, he was using his skill as a parliamentarian to help them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">D\u00e1il \u00c9ireann is no stranger to stories of shortcomings in specific areas of the health service. Individual case histories are frequently used to highlight to the Government how the suffering of many can be alleviated with obvious actions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But what happened in the D\u00e1il on Wednesday was different. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This time, the case history belonged to one of their own. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Deputy Boyd Barrett was that patient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They listened. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He told how he was treated with a high-tech radiation machine. Every year, around half of the people who get a cancer diagnosis need them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey are called linear accelerators. They, as well as the staff, infrastructure and so on, have given me my life back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After the welter of warm welcomes, those last five words struck a chord.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Those machines should be replaced every 10 years but, \u201cfairly incredibly\u201d, some 35 per cent are nudging towards the 17-year mark while 40 per cent will have to be replaced in the next five years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Oncologists keep asking for a centralised, national replacement programme \u201cso they don\u2019t have to come each year with a begging bowl for money to provide this absolutely vital machinery to save lives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Richard Boyd Barrett <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/oireachtas\/2025\/11\/05\/richard-boyd-barrett-appeals-for-more-oncology-machines-that-have-given-me-my-life-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/oireachtas\/2025\/11\/05\/richard-boyd-barrett-appeals-for-more-oncology-machines-that-have-given-me-my-life-back\/\">brought their request to the floor of the D\u00e1il<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The living proof. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Jack Chambers promised he will bring the issue to the attention of the Minister for Health.
