{"id":166299,"date":"2025-11-06T16:07:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T16:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/166299\/"},"modified":"2025-11-06T16:07:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T16:07:08","slug":"cancer-patients-double-their-survival-rate-if-they-take-covid-vaccine-reveals-new-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/166299\/","title":{"rendered":"Cancer patients double their survival rate if they take Covid vaccine, reveals new study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Luke O&#8217;Neill has revealed that cancer patients who have the COVID vaccine live longer.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the Pat Kenny show on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ireland-live.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Newstalk<\/a> on Thursday morning, Professor O&#8217;Neill said the mRNA vaccine is now credited as boosting survival rates in cancer patients by boosting the body&#8217;s defenses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ NEXT:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ireland-live.ie\/news\/arts---entertainment\/1936964\/incredible-guests-revealed-for-this-week-s-late-late-show.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Incredible guests revealed for this week&#8217;s Late Late Show<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What they&#8217;re showing is if you have cancer and you get immunotherapy, to boost your immune system,&#8221; he said, &#8220;and you&#8217;ve also got the vaccine, they&#8217;re doubling the survival time in lung cancer and melanoma.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a remarkable study &#8211; it&#8217;s retrospective,&#8221; he explained, &#8220;they looked at people who had the vaccine and those who didn&#8217;t &#8211; they&#8217;re called check-point inhibitors and they&#8217;ve noticed this extension of life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With lung cancer, people were living 18 months longer if they&#8217;d had the COVID-19 vaccine, which is very significant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ NEXT:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ireland-live.ie\/news\/weather\/1936946\/early-ireland-weather-models-suggest-bitterly-cold-december-similar-to-2010-snow.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Early Ireland weather models suggest bitterly cold December similar to 2010 snow<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The groundbreaking study which was published in Nature, a world leading science journal, found those who had cancer that took the vaccine had a survival rate of 55% over a three year period, while those who didn&#8217;t take the vaccine had a survival rate of 30.8%.<\/p>\n<p>Check-point inhibitors are drugs commonly used in immunotherapy that tackle what are called checkpoint proteins which stop the immune system fighting back against cancer cells.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The immune system has a thing called a checkpoint and the tumour activates the checkpoint and stops the immune system getting in &#8211; like a barrier going down,&#8221; Professor O&#8217;Neill added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ NEXT:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ireland-live.ie\/news\/national-news\/1934217\/most-return-35-children-in-tusla-care-deemed-missing-at-any-one-time-since-2023.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8216;Most return&#8217; &#8211; 35 children in Tusla care deemed missing at any one time since 2023<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you stop the barrier, the immune system gets in, is the overall idea.
