{"id":166308,"date":"2025-11-06T16:13:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T16:13:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/166308\/"},"modified":"2025-11-06T16:13:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T16:13:08","slug":"orange-order-sends-letter-of-complaint-to-king-charles-after-he-prayed-with-pope-leo-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/166308\/","title":{"rendered":"Orange Order sends letter of complaint to King Charles after he prayed with Pope Leo \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/orange-order\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/orange-order\/\">Orange Order<\/a> leaders have written to Britain\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/king-charles\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/king-charles\/\">King Charles<\/a> to express their \u201cdisappointment\u201d after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2025\/10\/23\/king-charles-and-pope-leo-pray-together-in-a-500-year-first\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2025\/10\/23\/king-charles-and-pope-leo-pray-together-in-a-500-year-first\/\">he prayed with Pope Leo XIV<\/a> in Rome last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In their letter, the Grand Masters of Ireland, England and Scotland called on Charles to \u201creflect on his coronation oath\u201d and the \u201cpromises he made before God\u201d when he became king.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Orange Standard, the institution\u2019s official publication, said praying with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pope-leo\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pope-leo\/\">Pope<\/a> contradicted the King\u2019s \u201csolemn commitments\u201d outlined by his coronation oath in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It confirmed the letter was sent by the three senior figures within the order, Edward Stevenson from Ireland, Tim Lord of England and Scotland\u2019s Andrew Murray.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Many members of the Orange family \u201cwill have been disappointed\u201d by the King\u2019s decision to pray with the pontiff in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vatican\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vatican\/\">Vatican<\/a>\u2019s Sistine Chapel on October 23rd, it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The event was the first joint worship including a British monarch and a Catholic pontiff since King Henry VIII broke away from Rome in 1534.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Although Charles has met the last three popes, and popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI travelled to Britain, their previous encounters never included joint prayers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Orange Standard article noted Charles had shown a willingness to engage with a range of other religious leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cNonetheless, the fact remains that in his 2023 coronation oath, King Charles swore to \u2018maintain in the United Kingdom the Protestant Reformed Religion established by law\u2019,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The publication urged Orangemen and women \u201cnot to be discouraged or deflected from our solid foundations, which are rooted in the truths of the Reformation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn October 1555, Latimer and Ridley were burned at the stake for their beliefs. Winds of change will always blow; they have done so down through the centuries and will no doubt continue.
