{"id":166405,"date":"2025-11-06T17:27:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T17:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/166405\/"},"modified":"2025-11-06T17:27:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T17:27:09","slug":"last-11-years-have-been-hottest-on-record-as-alarming-weather-streak-continues-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/166405\/","title":{"rendered":"Last 11 years have been hottest on record as \u2018alarming\u2019 weather streak continues \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/weather\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/weather\/\">weather<\/a> experts have warned that Earth is experiencing an \u201calarming streak of exceptional temperatures\u201d with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\">climate change<\/a> driving ever more difficult conditions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The State of the Global Climate Report from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) shows 2025 is set to become the second or third warmest year in human history. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That means every year since 2014 has been exceptionally hot, so the exception is becoming the norm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Other key indicators of the changing climate are also causing alarm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sea ice and glaciers have continued to shrink, with less Arctic sea-ice formed last winter than any year on record and the summer melt one of the most extreme in recent times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Glaciers in all parts of the world lost record volumes of ice, measured at 450 billion tonnes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Venezuela lost its final glacier, Humboldt, joining Slovenia as the first two countries to lose all their glaciers in modern times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\/2025\/11\/06\/how-can-ireland-help-to-sustainably-feed-10bn-people-and-slow-global-warming-by-2050\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How can Ireland help to sustainably feed 10bn people and slow global warming by 2050?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ocean heat continued to rise this year, beating the record levels of 2024 and causing seas to expand. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Glaciers in all parts of the world lost record volumes of ice. ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sea levels, driven up by ice melt and expanding oceans, rose by 4.1mm a year between 2016 and 2025, which was double the rate in the early 2000s. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Across the world this year, people, property, businesses and natural habitats were devastated by extreme rainfall, flooding and wildfires. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report was released at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\/2025\/11\/03\/cop30-whats-at-stake-for-ireland-and-the-wider-world\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\/2025\/11\/03\/cop30-whats-at-stake-for-ireland-and-the-wider-world\/\">Cop30 United Nations climate summit<\/a> in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil, where world leaders have gathered to discuss joint climate action initiatives. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This year\u2019s gathering was meant to see all countries submit new national climate action plans. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Collectively, these plans were to cut greenhouse gas emissions sufficiently to keep average global temperature rise from exceeding the relatively safe level of 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, before fossil fuel use accelerated. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">WMO secretary general Celeste Saulo let leaders know they failed the task. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis unprecedented streak of high temperatures, combined with last year\u2019s record increase in greenhouse gas levels, makes it clear that it will be virtually impossible to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees in the next few years without temporarily overshooting this target,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBut the science is equally clear that it\u2019s still entirely possible and essential to bring temperatures back down to 1.5 degrees by the end of the century.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">United Nations secretary general Antonio Guterres called on the leaders to act with urgency. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEach year above 1.5 degrees will hammer economies, deepen inequalities and inflict irreversible damage,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe must act now, at great speed and scale, to make the overshoot as small, as short, and as safe as possible \u2013 and bring temperatures back below 1.5 degrees before the end of the century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph
