{"id":166640,"date":"2025-11-06T20:24:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T20:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/166640\/"},"modified":"2025-11-06T20:24:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T20:24:07","slug":"man-handed-restraining-order-after-destroying-neighbours-floral-display-with-weedkiller-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/166640\/","title":{"rendered":"Man handed restraining order after destroying neighbour\u2019s floral display with weedkiller \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A judge has imposed a restraining order on an Ennis man after hearing  he destroyed  his neighbours\u2019 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/chelsea-flower-show\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/chelsea-flower-show\/\">Chelsea Flower Show<\/a>\u201d floral display with weedkiller as part of an ongoing  row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At Ennis District Court, Judge Vincent Deane granted the three-year restraining order to an Ennis couple against the man after hearing  the  disagreement arose when the applicant planted flowers in a public area opposite the homes in the housing estate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The joint applicant for the restraining order told the court that after moving into the residential area a few years ago, he set out to improve a Clare County Council-owned area across from the houses, clearing it of briars and weeds to plant flowers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The man said that the council  gave him a \u20ac400 grant for flowers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the man said  his retired neighbour did not like what he was doing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In evidence, the man told the court: \u201cHe came to me and he told me that \u2018we had a separate way of doing things on the street\u2019, and that he didn\u2019t want someone like myself coming in disturbing things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI said to him \u2018I only want to clean up the street, plant flowers\u2019. I got grants off the council for the flowers and I had it like the Chelsea Flower Show, and he destroyed everything by putting weedkiller on the flowers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The man said his disgruntled neighbour \u2013 who did not appear in court for the restraining order application hearing \u2013 told him \u201che didn\u2019t want change on the street and he was happy with the way it was\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The man said  his neighbour became threatening and abusive, \u201cand I made a complaint to garda\u00ed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The man said  he wanted to improve the look of the area, mainly for the residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said: \u201cWhen they look out their window and it looks like the Chelsea Flower Show, it makes them happy \u2013 and then someone comes along like that and destroys everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Asked by Judge Deane  whether he had ever spoken to his neighbour after that, the man said one day the neighbour had become verbally abusive, \u201cand I asked him, \u2018If you want to do something, come over with a pair of wellies on you and give me a hand\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The man alleged that his neighbour then \u201ctook out a penknife and threatened me. He said that if I didn\u2019t stop he would stick the knife on me, so I went to the garda\u00ed to make a complaint\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The man said  his neighbour had also stood outside his house to take photos of it.  He told the court  he just wishes that his neighbour would leave himself and his wife alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In evidence, the man\u2019s wife told the court: \u201cIt is continuous harassment. I have never known a man to be so aggressive in all my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Judge Deane granted the couple a three-year order stating that the man\u2019s actions of standing outside their home taking photos was inappropriate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said: \u201cThere doesn\u2019t seem to be any reason why he needs to be photographing the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Judge Deane said that the order is to also prohibit the man having any contact with the couple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Solicitor John Casey, for the couple, said that since the restraining order  had been applied for, the man\u2019s inappropriate behaviour had stopped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said: \u201cAll they want is for their neighbour to leave them alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">William Cahir, solicitor for the man handed the order, said  he had been blindsided by the couple\u2019s evidence in court as it went way beyond the statements seeking the order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In restraining order applications, no party to the case can be identified. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A judge has imposed a restraining order on an Ennis man after hearing he destroyed his neighbours\u2019 \u201cChelsea&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":166641,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[73],"tags":[79,95843,18,19,17],"class_list":{"0":"post-166640","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-business","8":"tag-business","9":"tag-chelsea-flower-show","10":"tag-eire","11":"tag-ie","12":"tag-ireland"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@ie\/115504628603278228","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/166640","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=166640"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/166640\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/166641"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=166640"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=166640"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=166640"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
