At higher doses, the cost will go up to $450 per month for Zepbound.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"promo-box\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__dark-grey__UFC18 text-module__regular__qJJtA text-module__small__sph8i body-module__base__o--Cl body-module__small_body__gOmDf article-body-module__promo-box__hVl8h\"> Sign up  <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/price-cuts-help-more-americans-start-weight-loss-drugs-maybe-not-stay-them-2025-11-07\/undefined?location=article-paragraph&amp;redirectUrl=%2Fbusiness%2Fhealthcare-pharmaceuticals%2Fprice-cuts-help-more-americans-start-weight-loss-drugs-maybe-not-stay-them-2025-11-07%2F\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Current costs for people without insurance are closer to $500 per month at the higher doses.<\/p>\n<p>The drugmakers also pledged to launch a new generation of weight-loss pills at $149 per month for the lowest dose, increasing to $399 for higher doses, if they are approved for the U.S. market.<\/p>\n<p>Americans on the Medicare program for people age 65 and older will see the biggest change from the agreement, with expanded eligibility for a prescription and an out-of-pocket cost capped at $50 per month.<\/p>\n<p>The agreed prices are part of a government pilot program that would become regular Medicare policy if it shows that by losing weight, Americans need less medical care for related, and costly, health problems, such as heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When monthly costs fall below $200, access to evidence-based treatment expands dramatically,&#8221; Dr. Leslie Golden, an obesity medicine physician in Wisconsin, said. The new prices should lead to &#8220;a noticeable increase in patients receiving life-changing treatment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>LOWER PRICE NEEDED FOR LONG-TERM USEA recent <a data-testid=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_reports\/RRA4153-1.html\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC link-module__with-icon__qlg76\">survey, opens new tab<\/a> by the research group Rand showed about 12% of Americans have tried one of these GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, still a small proportion of the 42% of people living with obesity in the country. Many stop using the treatments due to side effects, cost and concerns over long-term use.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Caroline Apovian, an obesity specialist and professor at Harvard Medical School, said the deal with Lilly and Novo helps, &#8220;but some people still can\u2019t pay at $350 per month and these are drugs that are needed to be taken forever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Studies have shown that many patients regain weight after stopping the medication.<\/p>\n<p>Under the deal, commercial health insurers would also be able to access prices estimated to be 25% lower than current cash prices. Doctors said the expanded Medicare coverage could persuade more employers to include weight-loss drugs in their benefit plans.<\/p>\n<p>The agreed prices will come into effect no later than January for cash payers, by mid-2026 for Medicare patients and on an ongoing basis for enrollees in the Medicaid program for low-income people depending on when states sign up.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Sarah Ro, medical director of the University of North Carolina Health\u2019s weight-management program, said coverage of weight-loss drugs had been trending in the wrong direction this year.
