{"id":168491,"date":"2025-11-07T20:03:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T20:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/168491\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T20:03:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T20:03:08","slug":"aer-lingus-ceo-says-manchester-base-is-underperforming-as-cabin-crew-plan-more-strikes-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/168491\/","title":{"rendered":"Aer Lingus CEO says Manchester base is underperforming as cabin crew plan more strikes \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\">Aer Lingus<\/a>\u2019s Manchester Airport base is \u201cnot performing\u201d at a level that makes it attractive for further investment, the group\u2019s chief executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lynne-embleton\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lynne-embleton\/\">Lynne Embleton<\/a> said, as the airline braces itself for further strike action from cabin crew based there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish carrier\u2019s UK operation flies between Manchester and American destinations including New York and Boston, as well as Bridgetown in Barbados. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cabin crew based at the British hub held a four-day strike over pay last month that hit 18 flights and an estimated 4,000 passengers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trade union Unite has told Aer Lingus that staff plan further stoppages between November 9th and November 18th. Crews will walk out between the 9th and the 11th, on the 14th and from the 16th to the 18th, Unite confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is understood that those strikes will hit around 7,500 passengers on flights between Manchester and New York, Florida and Barbados.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking after the airline published third quarter results on Friday that showed operating profit jumped by 22 per cent to \u20ac170 million, Ms Embleton said the base was simply not performing at a level to justify further investment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe base is performing lower than elsewhere in Aer Lingus, and Aer Lingus is performing lower than elsewhere in IAG, so it\u2019s not performing at a level that makes it attractive for investment,\u201d she told The Irish Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe\u2019ve had several days of industrial action so far. We\u2019ve managed through the strike. We\u2019ve reaccommodated more than 90 per cent of passengers. Some have taken refunds but most have taken alternative flights we\u2019ve made available for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere are more strike dates planned. I think the key thing here is we\u2019ve benchmarked pay,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve put forward an offer that is fair and competitive, and which we reached agreement with Unite on two separate occasions. Unite recommended it: their members rejected it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cManchester has to be cost competitive. The airline needs to be cost competitive and it needs to perform financially to justify the asset allocation. So this is something that we\u2019re taking seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Around 130 airline staff voted to strike last month after rejecting management\u2019s offer of a 12 per cent pay increase and a $15 boost (\u20ac13) to their US overnight allowance, bringing it to $130.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The basic pay of the Manchester-based cabin crew and the overnight allowance would still lag Irish crews\u2019 earnings had they accepted the deal, according to Unite. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish crew\u2019s basic salaries start at \u20ac29,833.26 a year while their UK counterparts start at \u00a317,640.25 (\u20ac20,020).
