Jailed fraudster DJ Carey was seemingly homeless for a period over the winter of 2021 and early 2022, according to the author of a new book about the disgraced Kilkenny hurler<\/a>. Journalist Eimear N\u00ed Bhraon\u00e1in has written an explosive expos\u00e9 on Carey\u2019s life and crimes, revealing new details about the former GAA star\u2019s chaotic downfall.<\/p>\n

Carey was sentenced this week to five and a half years in prison on ten counts of deception<\/a> after admitting to conning dozens of people out of large sums of money.<\/p>\n

N\u00ed Bhraon\u00e1in\u2019s new book, The Dodger, is based on more than 100 interviews, including conversations with many of Carey\u2019s victims.<\/p>\n

The author also paints a picture of turmoil in Carey\u2019s private life \u2014 describing how he moved between homes and was left effectively homeless for a spell around four years ago.<\/p>\n

N\u00ed Bhraon\u00e1in writes: \u201cFrom the time DJ moved out of the house on Granges Road in Kilkenny in late 2021\/early 2022, he appeared to be homeless, and he checked into hotels for long periods, including the five-star Lyrath Hotel in Kilkenny.\u201d<\/p>\n

A hotel source confirmed this to N\u00ed Bhraon\u00e1in, saying Carey allegedly told staff he was ill with cancer, which explained why he kept to his room.<\/p>\n

Things would get even worse for the former All-Ireland winner, who is said to have spent a period of time sleeping in his car.<\/p>\n

N\u00ed Bhraon\u00e1in continues: \u201cAs well as staying in hotels, DJ was spotted sleeping in his car in the car park at Mount Juliet Golf Club, where he used to use the men\u2019s locker room to shower and get dressed in the mornings.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was also seen sleeping in his car outside the Hoban Hotel, just off the ring road in Kilkenny, where he went for breakfast in the mornings.<\/p>\n

\u201cA number of sources reported seeing DJ in the hotel during this period and said he looked dishevelled, which was out of character for him.\u201d<\/p>\n
