{"id":169959,"date":"2025-11-08T15:34:17","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T15:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/169959\/"},"modified":"2025-11-08T15:34:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T15:34:17","slug":"four-late-late-show-talking-points-from-saipan-to-a-toy-show-surprise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/169959\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Late Late Show talking points from Saipan to a Toy Show surprise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fresh off appearing at the Cork International Film Festival on Thursday, Eanna Hardwicke and Steve Coogan dropped in to Donnybrook to talk all things <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/lifestyle\/artsandculture\/arid-41699654.html\">Saipan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The film, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/lifestyle\/artsandculture\/arid-41738265.html\">which premiered at the festival<\/a> ahead of a January release in Irish cinemas, tells the tale of the infamous bust-up between Roy Keane (Hardwicke) and Mick McCarthy (Coogan) at the 2002 World Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Hardwicke explained how it was just moments into the premiere that a horrifying thought passed his mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI thought: this is a mental idea, we\u2019re premiering this in Cork in front of 800 Corkonians! They\u2019ll decide after five minutes \u2013 nah this isn\u2019t for me!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBut it went down a treat, it was very special because that\u2019s my local theatre, I did plays there as a kid and been going my whole life!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Coogan joked that the script, at times, was \u201ctoo pro-Roy\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI think, in the end, people will be pleased because it\u2019s fairly even-handed. It\u2019s probably 51-49 to Roy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            It\u2019s not just about football. It\u2019s about Irish identity and how everyone (else) loves the Irish but they don\u2019t want them to be too successful!\u201d\u00a0\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Coogan also heaped praise upon his co-star for his work both in and out of character.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cEanna had abs, I had attitude.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHe\u2019s a startling young actor with an incredible career ahead of him. It\u2019s like having a good sparring partner. He raised my game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Toy Show surprise\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">One child got the shock of their life in relation to the  Late Late Toy Show.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ahead of the December 5 spectacular, a young boy called CJ got a knock at the door in Newbridge and was informed he would be performing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Though he did have the best quip of the night: \u201cIs this Patrick Kielty?!&#8230; How did you know where I live?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But on top of that, Kielty also announced the  BIG BIG Ticket Giveaway\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">On Friday, 21 November, the Toy Show will take over both radio and TV, where a number of competition entrants will win tickets to the biggest event on Irish TV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Holly Cairns<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Rebel nature of the evening continued with the arrival of the Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She explained how her party were happy to get behind president-elect <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/catherine-connolly_topic-5046866.html\">Catherine Connolly<\/a> right at the beginning of her campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She said: \u201cI was lucky enough to get to know her in the previous D\u00e1il. And you know, she always stood out to me as somebody who stood on the right side of important arguments.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She said that Simon Harris\u2019s recent <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/opinion\/commentanalysis\/arid-41735316.html\">comments on immigration<\/a> showed the Government were in \u201cpanic mode\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhat they&#8217;re doing is trying to point the finger of blame for their failures elsewhere, and that is not only irresponsible, but in the current climate, when we know things are so fragile, when it&#8217;s a number of days after the riots outside City West. It&#8217;s actually reprehensible because it fans the flames of a very serious and delicate situation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThat is the very least that he could do is condemn an attack whereby somebody quite literally tried to burn children, including a nearly three week old baby, alive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She also noted that other members of the D\u00e1il were conflating crime with immigration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThat is also factually incorrect. There&#8217;s actually more crime amongst Irish people than there is amongst our immigrant community, and that&#8217;s just a matter of fact.
