{"id":170148,"date":"2025-11-08T18:02:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T18:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/170148\/"},"modified":"2025-11-08T18:02:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T18:02:07","slug":"tributes-paid-to-irishman-who-drowned-in-accident-in-madeira-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/170148\/","title":{"rendered":"Tributes paid to Irishman who drowned in accident in Madeira \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tributes are being paid to an Irishman who lost his life in a drowning tragedy in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/portugal\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/portugal\/\">Portugal<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Oleksandr Kurinnyy (44), who was known locally as Alex, drowned while on holiday on the Portuguese island of Madeira off the coast of Africa on Saturday, November 1st. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was living with his family at Ballycurrane in Thurles in Co <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tipperary\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tipperary\/\">Tipperary<\/a> and had also lived in Tullamore in Co Offaly. His family are originally from Eastern Europe. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Alex had been working at  Dew Valley Foods  for more than 10 years  as a general operative in the meat factory. His family have been living in Thurles for longer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Paying tribute, one work colleague said, \u201cSincere sympathies to Svitlana, Vlana and all of Oleksandr\u2019s family on their sudden and sad loss. It was a pleasure to have known and worked with Oleksandr for several years. Thoughts with you all at this difficult time.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">DAPA Dance club in Thurles, which was attended by his daughter, said, \u201cEveryone at DAPA was shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Oleksandr &#8230; our thoughts and prayers are with Lana, Vlada and all his family and friends at this extremely sad time.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Local Fianna F\u00e1il TD Ryan O\u2019Meara  also \u201cextended sympathy to the family at this very sad time\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Alex is predeceased by his mother Nadia (Kurinna) and is survived by his wife Lana, daughter Vlana, brother Oleksii, colleagues in Dew Valley Foods, neighbours and many friends. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">No funeral arrangements have been made as yet. It is understood that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-foreign-affairs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-foreign-affairs\/\">Department of Foreign Affairs<\/a> is providing consular assistance to the family. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Tributes are being paid to an Irishman who lost his life in a drowning tragedy in Portugal.
