{"id":171501,"date":"2025-11-09T14:14:21","date_gmt":"2025-11-09T14:14:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/171501\/"},"modified":"2025-11-09T14:14:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T14:14:21","slug":"philadelphia-art-museum-to-exhibit-two-van-gogh-sunflower-paintings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/171501\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia Art Museum to Exhibit Two Van Gogh \u2018Sunflower\u2019 Paintings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/philadelphia-art-museum\/\" id=\"auto-tag_philadelphia-art-museum\" data-tag=\"philadelphia-art-museum\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Art Museum<\/a> (PAM) will mount an exhibition next year bringing together two of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/vincent-van-gogh\/\" id=\"auto-tag_vincent-van-gogh\" data-tag=\"vincent-van-gogh\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vincent van Gogh<\/a>\u2019s iconic \u201cSunflower\u201d paintings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2025\/11\/07\/revealed-philadelphia-is-planning-a-sensational-van-gogh-exhibition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according<\/a> to the Art Newspaper (TAN). \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe exhibition, which is set to run from June 6 to October 11, 2026, will be titled \u201cVan Gogh\u2019s Sunflowers: A Symphony in Blue and Yellow\u201d. It will feature the PAM\u2019s Sunflowers\u00a0(1889), with its distinct turquoise background, and the artist\u2019s original iteration of the subject Sunflowers (1888), with the better-known yellow background.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe exhibition is part of an ongoing collaboration between the two institutions. The PAM loaned its Sunflowers to the National Gallery last year for an show, marking the first time the work had left the museum since its acquisition in 1963. The National Gallery Sunflowers, which it acquired in 1924, has only traveled abroad four times.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Articles<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-artnews-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1920__sashasudaheadshot.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of a white woman in a black dress with a white color standing outside with a glass building blurred in the background.\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA PAM spokesperson told TAN that the exhibition \u201cwill bring together two Sunflower paintings, considering how the artist used color and brushwork to different expressive effects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAt the National Gallery exhibition, titled \u201cVan Gogh: Poets and Lovers\u201d, the two paintings hung in a triptych arrangement with the artist\u2019s 1889 portrait Lullaby: Madame Augustine Roulin Rocking a Cradle (La Berceuse), now owned by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, hanging the middle. The display was one that was originally conceived of by van Gogh, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgallery.org.uk\/about-us\/press-and-media\/press-releases\/philadelphia-s-sunflowers-to-travel-from-the-united-states-for-the-first-time-for-the-national-gallery-to-recreate-van-gogh-s-idea-of-a-triptych\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according<\/a> to the National Gallery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAhead of that exhibition, the PAM Sunflowers was reframed, ditching an ornate frame that it had likely had for a century, according to TAN. The museum opted for a simpler frame similar to the one the National Gallery had put on its Sunflowers in 1999.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe news of the PAM exhibition comes days after the museum\u2019s director was terminated for \u201ccause\u201d by the museum\u2019s board of trustees, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/news\/2025\/11\/04\/sasha-suda-out-art-museum\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according<\/a> to a report by Philadelphia Magazine.
