{"id":172387,"date":"2025-11-10T02:05:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T02:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/172387\/"},"modified":"2025-11-10T02:05:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T02:05:12","slug":"harvey-morrison-sherratts-mother-says-report-alleging-mistaken-palliative-label-is-huge-shock-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/172387\/","title":{"rendered":"Harvey Morrison Sherratt\u2019s mother says report alleging mistaken palliative label is \u2018huge shock\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The mother of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/08\/21\/father-of-harvey-morrison-sherratt-says-his-son-was-abandoned-by-disability-services\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/08\/21\/father-of-harvey-morrison-sherratt-says-his-son-was-abandoned-by-disability-services\/\">Harvey Morrison Sherratt<\/a>, the nine-year-old boy who died after waiting a number of years for spinal surgery, has described a report alleging he was mistakenly removed from the waiting list because it was believed he was in palliative care, as a \u201chuge shock\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report has been described as \u201cdevastating\u201d by Sinn F\u00e9in leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mary-lou-mcdonald\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mary-lou-mcdonald\/\">Mary Lou McDonald<\/a>, who called for a \u201cfull public inquiry\u201d into the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Sunday Times is reporting a protected disclosure was submitted to Minister for Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\">Jennifer Carroll MacNeill<\/a> in August, from a whistleblower who discovered Harvey had been taken off the list because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/children-s-health-ireland-chi\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/children-s-health-ireland-chi\/\">Children\u2019s Health Ireland<\/a> (CHI) believed he was terminally ill. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">CHI later realised this was incorrect after a report from a consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital (Gosh) in London stated Harvey was suitable for surgery to straighten his spine,  newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">CHI said it was unable to publicly comment about Harvey\u2019s individual case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Harvey\u2019s mother, Gillian Sherratt, said the claims made in the protected disclosure came as a \u201chuge shock\u201d to her and her husband, Stephen Morrison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEven if Harvey was palliative, which I can say 100 per cent he was not, why is that not in his medical records, why was he not linked to a palliative care team, it makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHarvey wasn\u2019t even on prescription pain relief, which you\u2019d think would be the very least a child receiving palliative care would be getting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Sherratt said her son\u2019s medical team \u201cnot once\u201d mentioned during Harvey\u2019s treatment that he required palliative care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said: \u201cI think we would remember that discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/09\/29\/government-commits-to-spina-bifida-and-scoliosis-inquiry-after-meeting-harvey-morrison-sherratts-parents\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Government commits to CHI inquiry after meeting Harvey Morrison Sherratt\u2019s parentsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Gillian Sherratt and Stephen Morrison, parents of Harvey, speaking to the media following their meeting with T&#xE1;naiste Simon Harris and Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill in September. Photograph: Niall Carson\/ PA Wire   <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Harvey\u2019s parents are to meet Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and T\u00e1naiste Simon Harris at a pre-planned meeting on Monday to discuss terms of an independent inquiry into CHI\u2019S handling of Harvey\u2019s case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Sherratt said she will be asking Ms Carroll MacNeill and Mr Harris for \u201cclarity\u201d on what the government\u2019s response is to the protected disclosure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe first thing I want (the Minister) to do is to get to the bottom of actually what happened \u2013 the true version of events \u2013 the good, the bad, and the ugly of all of it, we want to know,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The boy\u2019s parents said, despite repeatedly asking CHI why their son had been removed from the surgery waiting list, they have not been given an adequate answer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Sherratt said in an X post on Sunday: \u201cIf Harvey was given appropriate treatment, if everything is above board, why do we still not have answers??\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms McDonald, reposting Ms Sherratt\u2019s X post, said: \u201cDevastating report. Whistleblower alleging Harvey was removed from waiting list based on a false assumption by CHI that he was palliative. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHow could something like this happen? Gillian and Stephen were never consulted or informed. They were stonewalled. There has to be a full independent statutory inquiry. I will stand with them until truth is delivered for them and all the other families <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/justiceforharvey?src=hashtag_click\" rel=\"nofollow\">#justiceforharvey<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is understood CHI was unaware of the protected disclosure and has not seen it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A CHI spokeswoman said: \u201cWe at Children\u2019s Health Ireland (CHI) continue to extend our deepest condolences to the Morrison\u2013Sherratt family on the loss of their son, Harvey. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMany of our staff cared for Harvey his whole life, and are deeply affected by his passing. We remain available to meet Harvey\u2019s family, if and when they wish to do so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cCHI cannot comment publicly about Harvey\u2019s individual case. The Department takes its obligations under the Act seriously and has robust procedures in place to handle such matters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe Designated Person within the Department of Health oversees this process. Access to such information is restricted to ensure confidentiality and protect all parties involved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cUnder the Act Protected Disclosures received via the ministerial reporting channel must be forwarded directly to the Protected Disclosures Commissioner within 10 calendar days of receipt. The Commissioner\u2019s duty is to transmit reports received under the Act to the most appropriate prescribed person to follow up on the information reported,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The T\u00e1naiste was unaware of the protected disclosure, said a spokesman and could nor comment regardless, said a spokesman. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His \u201coverriding priority\u201d was working with families affected by shortcomings in paediatric spinal surgery services, \u201cto ensure that an inquiry takes place\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A HSE spokeswoman said that in late summer, chief executive of the HSE, Bernard Gloster received a draft timeline from CHI in respect of Harvey\u2019s care, and that he sent this draft to Harvey\u2019s parents for any input they might wish to give.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The HSE spokeswoman said that Mr Gloster was \u201canxious to discuss with Harvey\u2019s parents, when they are ready, the possibility of a HSE review of his care\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnd, in the event of any review, any and all available information will be considered,\u201d the HSE spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A Children\u2019s Health Ireland representative said: We at Children\u2019s Health Ireland (CHI) continue to extend our deepest condolences to the Morrison\u2013Sherratt family on the loss of their son, Harvey. \u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMany of our staff cared for Harvey his whole life, and are deeply affected by his passing.
