{"id":172539,"date":"2025-11-10T04:29:16","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T04:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/172539\/"},"modified":"2025-11-10T04:29:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T04:29:16","slug":"drones-that-support-emergency-services-could-be-revolutionary-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/172539\/","title":{"rendered":"Drones that support emergency services could be \u2018revolutionary\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Drones that support emergency services could be \u201crevolutionary\u201d for first-responders, according to Teresa Hudson of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-fire-brigade\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-fire-brigade\/\">Dublin Fire Brigade<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In July a water emergency incident was simulated by Dublin Fire Brigade in a pilot research project as part of a drone innovation partnership led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/maynooth-university\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/maynooth-university\/\">Maynooth University<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the demonstration, Dublin Fire Brigade responded to a report of someone entering the river Liffey. An automated drone was launched from a docking station at Poolbeg, autonomously navigated to the scene and streamed high resolution data and video to incident command teams. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools were also used to support real-time assessment, help responders rapidly locate the casualty and understand their condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The exercise was carried out in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\/\">Dublin City Council<\/a>, the Irish Aviation Authority and Dublin Fire Brigade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Hudson, station officer of the Organisational Intelligence Unit with Dublin Fire Brigade, said \u201cthe trial gives us insight into how it would help us in emergencies and gives us more confidence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt could be another tool in our arsenal in saving lives in Dublin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> Oftentimes, emergency callers might not know exactly where the incident is taking place or may give conflicting information. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The details first-responders can get from drones \u201cmakes things more efficient; we\u2019re saving more lives and less risk is involved\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said the use of this technology, with RGB cameras and thermal imagery, could be \u201cinvaluable at night time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Drone taking off on a flying mission from the GeoAerospace dockstation near Poolbeg, Dublin\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/PKPIAYAMTBBF5JYBOEEKEV3P2M.jpg\"   width=\"400\" height=\"533\"\/>Drone taking off on a flying mission from the GeoAerospace dockstation near Poolbeg, Dublin <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Principal investigator Prof Tim McCarthy of the department of computer science at Maynooth University said his research team is looking at \u201chow drones can be used and deployed in busy urban environments\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The key with this research project is that \u201cthe drone can be operated remotely\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Once a report comes in, Ms Hudson can press a button to launch the drone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The drone takes two minutes to fly over the river section where a person was reported to have fallen in. After, the drone goes back and lands at its dock to automatically recharge. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cVery quickly they are getting eyes over the scene. So instead of her [Ms Hudson] waiting, say, 20 minutes, possibly even more, she\u2019s getting this information in minutes. That is critically important because when she tasks her boat crew, she can now tell them where to go and try and guide them in. So, it\u2019s a more effective response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This research began in October 2024 and Prof McCarthy says  it will continue into the middle of next year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He hopes in the \u201cnext year or so\u201d this kind of drone could be used across Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt needs conversation between the different agencies who are interested and also ensuring that the technology is there and it\u2019s ensuring that the approval and the certification is carried out correctly and that it\u2019s operated correctly,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He believes other emergency serviceswould have an interest in this kind of technology. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI think there\u2019s absolutely a role for these technologies.
