Nuno Espirito Santo\u2019s \u2018spectacular fallout\u2019 with Nottingham Forest transfer guru Edu is behind him taking the lead in the Premier League sack race in what is a \u2018deeply personal\u2019 rift between the pair.<\/p>\n

Nuno revealed increased tension between himself and owner Evangelos Marinakis on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always had a very good relationship with the owner. Last season, we were very close and spoke on a daily basis,\u201d he explained<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis season it is not so well [between us], but I always believe that dialogue is important because my concern is the squad and the season we have ahead of us. Our relationship has changed, and we are not as close.\u201d<\/p>\n

That comments followed rumours of Nuno\u2019s potential sacking on Friday<\/a><\/strong>; in response to those reports the Portuguese boss said: \u201cWhere there\u2019s smoke, there\u2019s fire, so I know how things work, but I\u2019m here to do my job.\u201d<\/p>\n

But now The Athletic claim<\/a><\/strong> the rift at Forest isn\u2019t between Nuno and Marinakis, but Nuno and Edu, with the Forest owner now faced with the very real prospect of having to choose between them, with the relationship between the duo \u2018potentially irreparable\u2019.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s been a \u2018spectacular fallout behind the scenes\u2019 and Nuno is said to have made \u2018made his feelings clear, particularly about Edu, both to the man himself and others at the club\u2019, with Marinakis \u2018aligning himself with Edu\u2019.<\/p>\n

The issues have \u2018been bubbling away for the past two months\u2019 to leave Marinakis \u2018in a difficult position\u2019 as the pair are \u2018not even on speaking terms\u2019, with \u2018Nuno largely the aggressor\u2019 while Edu \u2018stays away from the training ground\u2019.<\/p>\n

Nuno aired their dirty laundry last week ahead of their first game against Brentford.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cWe are very far \u2013 very, very far \u2013 from where we should be. We are very far in terms of preparation, in terms of planning, in terms of the squad.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we are all very worried that in two or three days\u2019 time we are playing for the Premier League, the most demanding competition in the world. And we are very far. Very, very far.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe plans that we had didn\u2019t come through. The preparation in terms of squad was not ideal. We didn\u2019t have a chance to create the bond \u2013 and this is what I think is more important.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we don\u2019t know which squad we have. We have players working here that know they\u2019re going to leave on loan. We have a major problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Nuno didn\u2019t name Edu, \u2018everyone at the top level of the club, from Marinakis down, knew who it was directed towards \u2014 and that there was more to it than just the club\u2019s transfer business\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018It was no coincidence that Forest suddenly stepped up their transfer activity on Thursday and Friday\u2019, with\u00a0Omari Hutchinson, Arnaud Kalimuendo and James McAtee all joining in permanent deals, while Douglas Luiz arrived on loan from Juventus, with an obligation to buy.<\/p>\n

Those deals changed the narrative but \u2018the rift still existed\u2019, with the report adding:<\/p>\n

\u2018It is no exaggeration to say Forest were stunned by Nuno\u2019s comments \u2014 not just what he said, but the fact he looked visibly angry \u2014 and his timing to go public in this way for an interview that was meant to go out 24 hours before their first game of the season.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

There\u2019s speculation that the increased involvement in transfers of Edu\u2019s \u2018close ally\u2019 Kia Joorabchian may be one cause of Nuno\u2019s frustration, with the manager\u2019s agent Jorge Mendes sidelined having been the go-to transfer intermediary for Forest last summer.<\/p>\n
