\n\tTrey Parker<\/a> and Matt Stone<\/a> are detailing their decision to steer heavily into politics<\/a> during the current season of South Park<\/a>, which has been laser-focused on President Trump<\/a> and his administration\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring an interview<\/a> published over the weekend with The New York Times, the show\u2019s creators were asked about the politics of season 28, which has helped generate the biggest ratings and most headlines for the Comedy Central series in decades.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s not that we got all political,\u201d Parker explained. \u201cIt\u2019s that politics became pop culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStone noted that speaking out against the Trump administration started to feel \u201ctaboo\u201d \u2014 presumably referring to the administration targeting media outlets such as CBS\u2019 60 Minutes, as well as late night series with ABC\u2019s Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CBS\u2019 Late Night with Stephen Colbert.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTrey and I are attracted to that like flies to honey,\u201d Stone said. \u201cOh,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0where the taboo is? Over there? OK, then we\u2019re over there \u2026 we just had to show our independence somehow.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThat said, it wasn\u2019t the plan to make the season as political as it was. The duo originally planned to target Trump in the season premiere as a one-time thing (featuring a graphically nude Trump<\/a>). But then it felt right to continue mining that vein for more comedy. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re just very down-the-middle guys,\u201d Parker said. \u201cAny extremists of any kind, we make fun of. We did it for years with the woke thing. That was hilarious to us. And this is hilarious to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the show\u2019s most recent Halloween episode<\/a>, the creators mocked their own focus on politics this season (as well as some of the backlash they\u2019ve received). \u201cHow many weeks has it been now, dealing with one stupid thing after another?\u201d Stan says to the show\u2019s audience. \u201cThe truth is, I think a lot of people are afraid to admit it. Yeah, everyone knows\u00a0South Park\u00a0sucks now and it\u2019s because all this political stuff is being totally bogged down in it.
