{"id":173713,"date":"2025-11-10T20:10:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T20:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/173713\/"},"modified":"2025-11-10T20:10:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T20:10:09","slug":"learning-to-speak-new-language-can-slow-biological-ageing-tcd-researchers-find-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/173713\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning to speak new language can slow biological ageing, TCD researchers find \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Learning to speak one or more new languages can slow biological ageing and protect the brain against age-related cognitive decline. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">So says new research reported in Nature Ageing, by scientists at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/trinity-college-dublin-tcd\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/trinity-college-dublin-tcd\/\">Trinity College Dublin<\/a> (TCD), the Basque Center On Cognition, Brain and Language in San Sebastian and the Latin American Brain Health Institute in Santiago, Chile. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOur results provide strong evidence that multilingualism functions as a protective factor for healthy ageing,\u201d said Agust\u00edn Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez, professor of global brain health at TCD, who co-led the research. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe protective effect was cumulative \u2013 the more languages people spoke, the greater their protection against ageing-related decline,\u201d said Prof Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The international team of scientists analysed data from 86,149 adults aged 51 to 90 living in 27 European countries. <\/p>\n<p>Ageing clock<b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A \u201cbio-behavioural ageing clock\u201d method was used to compare the participants\u2019 predicted biological age, based on health, cognition, education and lifestyle factors, with their actual chronological age. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was found that people from countries where multilingualism was common were 2.17 times less likely to experience accelerated ageing compared with those living where monolingualism held sway. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This evidence indicates  that language learning and its use activates and engages the brain networks related to attention, memory, decision-making and social interaction, said Prof Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This study improves on previous research investigating the link between multilingualism and ageing, which were limited by the use of smaller clinical samples, as well as patients that already had signs of cognitive impairment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The analysis, in this study, of a far larger, healthy population enabled the scientists to show the benefits of multilingualism went farther than simply delaying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dementia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dementia\/\">dementia<\/a> or mild cognitive impairment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The scientists examined the behavioural age gap \u2013 the difference between predicted biological age and actual age \u2013 between thousands of individual study participants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They found that multilingual individuals consistently exhibited slower ageing, even after the linguistic, social, physical and sociopolitical factors were taken into account. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe more languages people speak, the greater their protection against ageing-related decline,\u201d said Dr Lucia Amoruso of the Basque Centre On Cognition, Brain and Language. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMultilingualism is an accessible, low-cost tool for promoting healthy ageing across populations, complementing other modifiable factors such as creativity and education,\u201d added Dr Hern\u00e1n Hern\u00e1ndez of the Latin American Brain Health Institute in Chile. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The study found no evidence that the protective effect of multilingualism depended on the language learned. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/education\/2025\/03\/18\/there-will-be-challenges-are-primary-schools-ready-to-teach-foreign-languages\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We are least likely in the EU to know other languages. A bold new curriculum change may change thatOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The researchers didn\u2019t look at whether language learning by app, or its conversational use, were more protective against ageing, but they did note that social use of a new language was more likely to provide greater benefits than passive exposure or memory drills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cLanguage is not just words, but a dynamic, cognitive and social activity,\u201d said Prof Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez. \u201cUsing multiple languages in daily communication requires constant switching, contextual adaptation and emotional engagement \u2013 all of which activate distributed brain systems that support attention, memory and emotion regulation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In light of this study\u2019s findings, the scientists recommend that language learning is incorporated into public health plans to enhance cognitive resilience and reduce the burden of ageing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/work\/2025\/11\/03\/si-oui-ja-you-can-learn-a-language-late-in-life\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">S\u00ed, oui, ja!
