{"id":175350,"date":"2025-11-11T18:04:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T18:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/175350\/"},"modified":"2025-11-11T18:04:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T18:04:10","slug":"data-on-weather-systems-keeping-ireland-unusually-mild-at-risk-over-us-funding-gap-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/175350\/","title":{"rendered":"Data on weather systems keeping Ireland unusually mild at risk over US funding gap \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Data critical for tracking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/weather-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/weather-ireland\/\">weather<\/a> systems affecting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\">Ireland<\/a> is incomplete, but the body tasked with gathering it is facing a funding crisis, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cop30\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cop30\/\">Cop30<\/a> climate summit heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) warned that the loss of the US as a key funder was putting its work in jeopardy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That work includes improving understanding of the increasingly volatile Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), the system of ocean currents responsible for keeping Ireland\u2019s climate unusually mild for a country positioned so far north. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Thelma Krug, chair of the GCOS steering committee, speaking at the Cop30 climate summit to scientists whose work feeds into the system, said the withdrawal of US funding was a major problem. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have learnt with utmost concern that GCOS is facing difficulties that bring into question its very existence,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe did have a payment [from the US] for 2024 but we did not have a payment for 2025. Photograph: Getty Images <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An example is the AMOC which scientists have reported is slowing and could collapse, resulting in Ireland having icy winters like regions of Canada that share a similar latitude. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Opinions differ on how dramatically and how soon the change could happen and GCOS members warned more data was urgently needed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cModels show conflicted results and data is limited,\u201d said oceanographer, Karina Von Schuckmann. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWithout more robust observations, the future of the AMOC and our climate will remain really uncertain. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWithout long-term ocean observation, climate policy is flying blind.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Frank McGovern, chief climate scientist at the Irish Environmental Protection Agency, who chaired discussions at the gathering, said the information that flowed from GCOS could also \u201cprevent extreme weather events becoming extreme disasters\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\/2024\/02\/16\/ireland-must-prepare-for-atlantic-meridional-overturning-circulation-collapse-ff-senator-warns\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Collapse of Atlantic ocean current could turn Ireland\u2019s climate into Iceland\u2019sOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He explained afterwards how GCOS works. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s taking essential data from deep in the ocean to the top of the atmosphere and everything in between,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cYou\u2019re talking about meteorological observations, observations of greenhouse gases, forestry, grassland, rivers and lakes, the cryosphere and the oceans and everything that\u2019s happening in them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s done through a combination of instruments in situ on the ground, in the water, on ships and then also satellites. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe work with organisations around the world on setting out what are the variables, how to measure them and develop the systems to manage the data. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf you\u2019re in a developed country, you\u2019re probably doing a lot of these this anyhow but in some of the developing countries, there are major gaps.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"COP30 climate summit in Belem, Para state, Brazil. Photograph: Alessandro Falco\/Bloomberg <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">GCOS was set up after the 1992 Rio Earth Summit and Dr McGovern said maintaining the continuity it had developed since was extremely important. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The gathering heard about new projects by research bodies around the world that will feed into GCOS. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But it also heard of gaps such as the Amazon rainforest just beyond the Cop30 host city of Bel\u00e9m in Brazil where the impacts of fires and deforestation are understood, but not sufficiently quantified. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Arctic presents another challenge.
