Court(Image: PA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood has appeared in court on Monday (November 10), after being charged with rape and sexual assault.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">The 68-year-old is accused of offences against seven women, including three indecent assaults at the BBC studios in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">Westwood is also alleged to have raped a woman at a London hotel in 1996 and sexually assaulted another woman at a music festival in the city around 20 years later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">He appeared in the dock at Westminster Magistrates&#8217; Court on Monday wearing a dark grey shirt and spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">The court heard he has attended five voluntary police interviews since the investigation into the alleged offences began.<\/p>\n<p>Westwood is charged with:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"irishmirror\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Four counts of rape<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Nine counts of indecent assault<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Two counts of sexual assault<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">The former BBC DJ, who returned to the UK from Nigeria last week, was not required to enter pleas to any of the charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring granted Westwood bail on the condition that he does not contact prosecution witnesses.He will next appear at Southwark Crown Court on December 8.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy previously said: &#8220;It takes courage to come forward and report allegations of this nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">&#8220;The women who have done so have put their trust in us and we continue to provide them with all available support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">&#8220;Our investigation remains open and we&#8217;d encourage anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone with information, to come forward and speak with us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">The BBC Board apologised following a review which said the corporation &#8220;did not take adequate action&#8221; after learning of concerns regarding the hip hop DJ&#8217;s alleged behaviour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">In response to historical sexual abuse allegations, Westwood has previously said he &#8220;strongly denies all allegations of inappropriate behaviour&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">He stepped down from his show on Capital Xtra in April 2022 and left Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra in 2013 after nearly 20 years at the BBC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">He also presented the MTV UK car makeover show Pimp My Ride UK, which ran for three seasons from 2005 to 2007.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishmirror\">Westwood is the son of the former Anglican bishop of Peterborough, Bill Westwood, who died in the 1990s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The former BBC Radio 1 DJ appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on Monday.
