During a short Nintendo Direct this morning, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto showed off the first official trailer for next year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-super-mario-galaxy-movie\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-super-mario-galaxy-movie\" data-tag=\"the-super-mario-galaxy-movie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Super Mario Galaxy Movie<\/a> (out April 26, 2026), featuring a new look at the animated interplanetary adventure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe follow-up to 2023\u2019s billion-dollar hit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-reviews\/the-super-mario-bros-movie-review-chris-pratt-nintendo-charlie-day-anya-taylor-joy-seth-rogen-1234706451\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Super Mario Bros. Movie<\/a>, was formally revealed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/rs-gaming\/nintendo-direct-super-mario-galaxy-movie-virtual-boy-1235426100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">back<\/a> in September but the Nintendo livestream breaks open the mystery block on the film\u2019s story and characters, including many familiar faces for fans of the video games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWatch the trailer below.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe trailer begins with a look at diminutive Bowser (Jack Black), who is now living in a tiny version of his castle after being shrunk by a mini-mushroom at the end of the previous film. He retains an antagonistic relationship with Mario (Christ Pratt) but appears to be warming up to Luigi (Charlie Day). Their banter is followed by the arrival of a new threat, Bowser Jr., who aims to break his father out of the clutches of the plumber brothers. The teaser ends with a glimpse at an action sequence wherein new character Rosalina uses her magical powers to take down a giant robot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFollowing the trailer, Miyamoto kicked the presentation over to Illumination CEO, Chris Meledandri, to introduce the voice actors behind the two new additions: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/rs-gaming\/princess-peach-showtime-nintendo-mario-1234974248\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/rs-gaming\/princess-peach-showtime-nintendo-mario-1234974248\/\">Brie Larson<\/a> (Captain Marvel) as Rosalina, the godlike overseer of the cosmos, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-features\/benny-safdie-smashing-machine-interview-1235430581\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-features\/benny-safdie-smashing-machine-interview-1235430581\/\">Benny Safdie<\/a> (Oppenheimer) as Bowser Jr.. One big omission is Yoshi, Mario\u2019s longtime dinosaur pal and ridable mount \u2014 although the character rarely has speaking lines in the games.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-rollingstone-2022\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/002_f90976.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tBrie Larson voices Rosalina, the cosmic princess from the Galaxy games.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tUniversal; Nintendo<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tReturning in their roles from the previous film are Pratt as Mario, Day as his brother Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Black as Bowser.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe new additions have been hotly debated and joked about online following the lukewarm reception to the first movie\u2019s casting \u2014 primarily focused on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-reviews\/the-super-mario-bros-movie-review-chris-pratt-nintendo-charlie-day-anya-taylor-joy-seth-rogen-1234706451\/\">Chris Pratt as Mario<\/a>. Despite that left-field choice, the rest of the OG voice actors were much better received, with Charlie Day and Jack Black, especially, standing out as fan-favorites. The former introduced Bowser Jr., complete with his weaponized paint brush that\u2019s seen in the trailer. Most everything else seen comes from Galaxy, which is considered one of the best entries in the entire series, as well as an all-time great 3D platformer. <\/p>\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAlthough it was met with mediocre reviews, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-super-mario-bros-movie\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-super-mario-bros-movie\" data-tag=\"the-super-mario-bros-movie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Super Mario Bros. Movie<\/a> was a massive success for Nintendo and Illumination, grossing over $1 billion at the box office and having an extended run topping the streaming charts after releasing digitally on Peacock. The movie\u2019s reception was big enough to effectively wash away the sour taste of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/rs-gaming-lists\/bad-video-game-movie-adaptation-borderlands-1235076943\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/rs-gaming-lists\/bad-video-game-movie-adaptation-borderlands-1235076943\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">1993\u2019s live-action catastrophe<\/a>, with Nintendo accelerating its plans for future feature film adaptations of its properties, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-features\/legend-of-zelda-movie-nintendo-link-gaming-tom-holland-hunter-schafer-1234875058\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-features\/legend-of-zelda-movie-nintendo-link-gaming-tom-holland-hunter-schafer-1234875058\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">live-action take on The Legend of Zelda<\/a>, due out in 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrives in theaters April 26, 2026.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It only took one sequel and Mario\u2019s already going into outer space.
