\n\t\u201cSound of Silence,\u201d a gothic horror feature telling the true story of mass-murdering nuns in Greece, is hitting the AFM. <\/p>\n
\n\tPlaytime, a Vuelta Group company, has boarded international sales on the elevated genre project which starts filming on location in Greece this week. \u201cSound of Silence\u201d marks the second feature of Joyce A. Nashawati following her acclaimed debut film \u201cBlind Sun\u201d that played at Toronto and Sitges. <\/p>\n
\n\tRising actors Millie Brady (\u201cI See Buildings Fall Like Lightning\u201d) and Elsa Lekakou (\u201cKillerwood\u201d) are leading the cast. It will mainly shoot in English with some Greek dialogue. <\/p>\n
\n\tPan Cin\u00e9ma, a sister company to Playtime which is also part of Vuelta Group, is producing with Giant Steps Production. Co-producers are Anti-Worlds in U.K., Blonde Audiovisual in Greece, and Abbout Productions in Lebanon.<\/p>\n
\n\tThe prestige key crew includes cinematographer Jonathan Ricquebourg, whose credits include the Marion Cotillard movie \u201cThe Ice Tower\u201d and France\u2019s 2024 Oscar entry \u201cThe Taste of Things,\u201d and music composer Fatima Al Qadiri, who is behind the haunting soundtrack of Francois Ozon\u2019s \u201cThe Stranger\u201d and Mati Diop\u2019s Cannes prizewinning \u201cAtlantics.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tSet in the 1970\u2019s Greece, \u201cSound of Silence\u201d is inspired by the story of Abbess Mariam Soulakioti, believed to be 20th century\u2019s most prolific female mass murderer. \u201cAlice, a young American traveller,
camps on a secluded beach with fellow hippies while Cristina, works in the only tavern nearby.
One night, the hippie camp gets raided by the local police. The girls escape the raid but Cristina
is wounded and they need to find refuge. The nearest shelter is a remote monastery. But what
awaits them inside is no sanctuary\u2014only a death cult led by a ruthless Abbess,\u201d the synopsis reads. <\/p>\n
\n\t\u201c\u2018Sound of Silence\u2019 is one of those scripts that sends you chills down the spine, and as you turn the pages, you think to yourself, \u2018I can\u2019t believe this actually happened!\u2019 For genre fans, this will be a must see around the world,\u201d said Nicolas Brigaud-Robert, Playtime\u2019s co-CEO.<\/p>\n
\n\tNashawati said she \u201cwas impressed when my screenwriter brought me the true story of Mariam Soulakioti, an Abbess who \u2018purified\u2019 more than 300 followers through brutal rituals.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe director pointed out the monastery was located just an hour away from the seaside town where she grew up in Greece. \u201cI\u2019m hoping to take the audience on an intense emotional ride as they watch two
idealistic young girls journey through an upturned world,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cSound of Silence\u201d marks Pan Cinema\u2019s first venture into horror, Pan Cinema\u2019s producer Thomas Jacquey said. \u201cI\u2019m thrilled to present Driven by Joyce\u2019s razor-sharp direction, this fierce and haunting script is coming to life through a bold cast, promising a wild gothic survival, as visually striking as
it is terrifying,\u201d continued Jacquey, whose \u201cambition\u201d is \u201cto make this film a new cult horror classic.\u201d Pan Cinema\u2019s notable credits include \u201cIn the Land of Arto\u201d and \u201cPerfect Nanny.\u201d<\/p>\n
