{"id":177430,"date":"2025-11-12T23:08:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T23:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/177430\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T23:08:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T23:08:10","slug":"statutory-inquiry-into-scoliosis-and-spina-bifida-care-at-chi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/177430\/","title":{"rendered":"Statutory inquiry into scoliosis and spina bifida care at CHI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government is set to launch <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/arid-41740938.html\">a statutory inquiry<\/a> into scoliosis and spina bifida care at Children&#8217;s Health Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement that health minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and T\u00e1naiste Simon Harris would be recommending the inquiry came after they met on Wednesday evening with Gillian and Stephen Morrison Sherratt, the parents of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/opinion\/commentanalysis\/arid-41724843.html\">Harvey, who died in July<\/a> after facing long delays for surgery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The couple and advocate groups had been consistently calling for an inquiry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In a joint statement with the Scoliosis Advocacy Network and the Spina bifida and hydrocephalus paediatric advocacy group (SBHPAG), Gillian said she is now \u201chopeful\u201d for change.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4857309_8_articleinline_Justice_20for_20Harvey-2.jpg\" alt=\"Gillian and Stephen Sherratt arriving at Government Buildings today, Wednesday, ahead of their meeting with T\u00e1naiste Simon Harris and Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill. Picture: Leah Farrell\/RollingNews<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe are hopeful that the results of this inquiry will mean there will be true and substantial change going forward, so that no children will ever be failed in the same manner Harvey was,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Una Keightley, co-lead of SBHPAG, said: &#8220;We have waited for a decade for this.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She said they are determined terms of reference will be robust enough to get answers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Claire Cahill from the Scoliosis Advocacy Network agreed, saying the statutory inquiry is \u201ca necessity\u201d now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A spokeswoman for Jennifer Carroll MacNeill described the meeting as \u201ccollaborative and constructive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cA considerable body of work will be required and a facilitator will be appointed to scope the content of potential terms of reference,\u201d she said, adding this will be done with the families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The minister and T\u00e1naiste Simon Harris, who also attended, \u201care grateful\u201d to Harvey\u2019s family for their engagement on this, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ms Morrison Sherratt told reporters she also raised new concerns linked to a whistleblower\u2019s protected disclosure around why her son was removed from surgical waiting lists.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4857303_10_articleinline_IRISH_20Harvey_20_2015330941.jpg\" alt=\"Thousands of people took to the streets of Dublin in August for a Justice for Harvey march in memory of nine-year-old Harvey Morrison Sherratt\u00a0who died following delays for child spinal surgery, and for better rights and access to timely healthcare for children with disabilities. Picture: Gareth Chaney\/PA\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This was not discussed in detail for legal reasons, but Ms Carroll MacNeill is \u201clooking into it\u201d, she said.
