{"id":177898,"date":"2025-11-13T05:11:19","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T05:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/177898\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T05:11:19","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T05:11:19","slug":"supreme-court-judges-to-meet-this-week-to-consider-whether-to-hear-conor-mcgregor-appeal-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/177898\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court judges to meet this week to consider whether to hear Conor McGregor appeal \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A panel of three Supreme Court judges will meet on Thursday to consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/conor-mcgregor\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/conor-mcgregor\">Conor McGregor<\/a>\u2019s application for a further appeal over a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2024\/11\/22\/conor-mcgregor-to-pay-almost-250000-damages-to-nikita-hand-after-jury-finds-he-assaulted-her-in-dublin-hotel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2024\/11\/22\/conor-mcgregor-to-pay-almost-250000-damages-to-nikita-hand-after-jury-finds-he-assaulted-her-in-dublin-hotel\/\">civil jury finding<\/a> that he assaulted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nikita-hand\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nikita-hand\">Nikita Hand<\/a> in a Dublin hotel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The panel will consider the application in private and its decision on whether the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/supreme-court\">Supreme Court<\/a> will hear an appeal will be published on a future date. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The court will only hear an appeal if the panel, comprising Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne, Ms Justice Iseult O\u2019Malley and Mr Justice S\u00e9amus Woulfe, decide it raises an issue of public importance or that an appeal is in the interests of justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Last July, the Court of Appeal (CoA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2025\/07\/31\/conor-mcgregor-loses-appeal-over-civil-rape-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2025\/07\/31\/conor-mcgregor-loses-appeal-over-civil-rape-case\/\">dismissed Mr McGregor\u2019s appeal<\/a> against the High Court civil jury finding that he assaulted Ms Hand in Dublin\u2019s Beacon Hotel on December 9th, 2018. The court upheld the jury\u2019s award of almost \u20ac250,000 in damages to Ms Hand and directed she was entitled to her legal costs against Mr McGregor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The CoA dismissed a related appeal by James Lawrence, of Rafter\u2019s Road, Drimnagh, against a decision by the High Court\u2019s Mr Justice Alexander Owens, refusing to grant him legal costs against Ms Hand after the jury rejected her claim Mr Lawrence assaulted her after Mr McGregor left the hotel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Since the CoA judgment, Mr McGregor instructed new lawyers, Mulholland Law, to represent him in his  application to the Supreme Court for permission to appeal against the CoA decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mulholland Law is representing Mr Lawrence in a similar application for an appeal over the refusal of costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Both applications will be considered on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The law firm filed the applications with the Supreme Court in September. In a statement then, it said Mr McGregor and Mr Lawrence were \u201cdeeply disappointed\u201d by the decisions made in the lower courts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Lawrence has taken separate High Court proceedings against Ms Hand, alleging a malicious abuse of process, it also said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Solicitor Ciaran Mulholland said the firm believes the Supreme Court applications raise serious legal issues arising from the CoA judgment of July 31st last.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr McGregor\u2019s application for an appeal focuses on his right to silence, \u201cproperly exercised on occasions\u201d, Mr Mulholland said. Mr McGregor had replied \u201cno comment\u201d when questioned by garda\u00ed about allegations by Ms Hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">During his appeal last July, Mr McGregor sought to introduce new evidence that his lawyers said would call into question key aspects of Ms Hand\u2019s testimony, including how she sustained serious bruising on her body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2024\/11\/22\/conor-mcgregor-case-consent-or-lack-of-it-the-core-issue-in-nikita-hands-civil-action\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018I know what happened in that room\u2019: the full story of the Conor McGregor caseOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It included sworn statements by Samantha O\u2019Reilly and her partner Steven Cummins, who lived across the road from Ms Hand in Drimnagh, Dublin, for a time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms O\u2019Reilly claimed, from a room in her house, she heard and saw what appeared to be a physical altercation between Ms Hand and her then partner, Stephen Redmond, on the night of December 9\/10th, 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That evidence, Mr McGregor said, bolstered his insistence he was not responsible for extensive bruising on the body of Ms Hand, noted by a doctor on December 10th, 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Hand described the neighbours\u2019 claims as \u201clies\u201d and said Mr Redmond never assaulted her during their relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The new evidence was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2025\/07\/01\/conor-mcgregor-nikita-hand-civil-jury-rape-allegation-appeal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2025\/07\/01\/conor-mcgregor-nikita-hand-civil-jury-rape-allegation-appeal\/\">unexpectedly withdrawn<\/a> by Mr McGregor\u2019s legal team on the morning of the appeal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The CoA later granted an application by Ms Hand\u2019s lawyers to refer material to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for consideration of possible perjury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The DPP directed garda\u00ed to conduct an investigation which led to the arrests of a man and woman for interview.
