spiders have been observed for the first time weaving larger \u201cdecoy\u201d models of themselves to protect themselves from predators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The findings mark the first instance of any creature creating \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/truth-behind-three-sisters-veg-085130660.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:scarecrow;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scarecrow<\/a>\u201d versions to escape predators, researchers say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">These orb-weaving spiders belong to the genus Cyclosa genus and are found in the dense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/rainforests\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:rainforests;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">rainforests<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/asia\/southeast-asia\/super-typhoon-fung-wong-philippines-b2861560.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Philippines;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Philippines<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/mountainside-covered-thousands-mysterious-ancient-154247379.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Peru;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peru<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They have been observed for the first time making decorations resembling much larger and more dangerous spiders, made out of silk and natural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/materials\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:materials;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">materials<\/a> like prey carcasses, leaves, and plant matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sometimes, these decoys, often arranged at the centre of the web, may be up to 10 times as large as their creators, according to the new study published in the journal Ecology and resting within the decoy structure (Ecology and Evolution, 2025)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Cyclosa spiders also shake their webs to create movement of their fake decoys, called stabilimenta, and scare of predators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cHere, we provide the first formal scientific record of Cyclosa species from two continents that create stabilimenta visually resembling the shape of a larger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/spider\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:spider;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">spider<\/a>,\u201d researchers wrote in the study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe decoys created by our Cyclosa species are not just larger, but they are shaped to resemble a potential threat or an undesirable prey item, potentially providing a more effective deterrent against predators like damselflies,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Peru spider was observed constructing its decoys in darkness after the sun sets, completing the rest of the web closer to dawn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Researchers suspect this behaviour is evolutionarily optimised and a key component of the survival strategy of the species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis strategy allows them to complete the most critical part of their defence when visual predators are not active.
