{"id":178506,"date":"2025-11-13T13:14:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T13:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/178506\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T13:14:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T13:14:07","slug":"fossil-fuel-dependence-is-irelands-biggest-block-to-achieving-carbon-emissions-cuts-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/178506\/","title":{"rendered":"Fossil fuel dependence \u2018is Ireland\u2019s biggest block\u2019 to achieving carbon emissions cuts \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The biggest blockage to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\">Ireland<\/a>\u2019s progress on achieving legally-binding cuts in carbon emissions \u201cremains our dependence on expensive, harmful fossil fuels\u201d, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\">Climate Change<\/a> Advisory Council has warned. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The independent body, which advises the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\">Government<\/a>, criticised reliance on fossil fuels which were subsidised by \u20ac4.7 billion of taxpayers\u2019 money in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In its final evaluation for 2025 published on Thursday, it said some progress was made in achieving emissions reductions in the 2021-2025 period, set out in the country\u2019s first carbon budget which limits greenhouse gases permitted across the economy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Instead of the maximum emissions of 295 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2eq) set out for the five-year period up to 2025, Ireland will \u201covershoot by about 10 Mt CO2eq\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This means most sectors will have to apply more stringent limits for the 2026-2030 period, by which time the country is supposed to have cut emissions by 51 per cent compared to 2018 levels. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The council highlighted \u201cthis overshoot will need to be paid back in the next carbon budget &#8230; making it increasingly difficult to achieve\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Once again, it called out the transport sector, \u201cwhere emissions remain stubbornly high\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Government and the public can do more collectively and individually to make significant emissions reductions, it said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2025\/11\/12\/cop30-establishing-truth-around-climate-change-needs-more-than-a-slogan-says-lula\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cop30: Establishing truth around climate change needs more than a slogan, says LulaOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The council called for increased expenditure on public transport \u201censuring efficient, reliable and timely services\u201d; increased grants for less expensive electric vehicles and rapid implementation of a demand management strategy to help drive down emissions in this sector. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The council emphasised the critical role local authorities play in driving climate action at community level, especially through flagship \u201cdecarbonisation zones\u201d, which create momentum and deliver locally tailored solutions for households and businesses. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The council underlined the opportunity Ireland has to invest in decarbonising households, communities and businesses, \u201crather than paying extremely punitive compliance costs estimated to be up to \u20ac26bn for failing to meet EU targets\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Council chair Marie Donnelly added: \u201cIn our first carbon budget period, progress has undoubtedly been made in the built environment with the roll out of retrofits in our homes, increased uptake of protected urea in agriculture and growth in the development of renewable energy, especially wind and solar.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHowever, we need to redesign how we commute, heat homes, and power the economy.
