I would say it is a political compromise and should be seen as such.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Edenhofer also warned against scapegoating climate efforts for the EU\u2019s economic woes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe European economy certainly has a competitiveness problem,\u201d particularly in high-polluting industries and car manufacturers, he acknowledged. \u201cBut climate policy is very often blamed for a lack of industrial policy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He was particularly critical of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sueddeutsche.de\/wirtschaft\/evonik-christian-kullmann-emissionshandel-industrie-eu-li.3329647?reduced=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recent campaign<\/a> by parts of the German chemical industry to abolish the EU\u2019s carbon market, the heart of its climate legislation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find that utterly ridiculous,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The industry\u2019s concerns about the carbon market\u2019s current trajectory, which requires companies to hit net-zero before 2040, are valid, he added, which is why he supports limited reforms. But demands to abolish the EU\u2019s CO2 price are \u201cunhelpful\u201d in his view.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFundamentally, messages that climate policy is a nice luxury and now it\u2019s time to get back to the important things are absurd,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s grotesque. Climate impacts are real.
