Garcia-Maestas co-curated the 2025 edition and previously ran the exhibition program at Socrates Sculpture Park in New York. The two curators\u2019 collaboration will deepen Desert X\u2019s focus on the desert as both subject and medium, with works conceived to change alongside the landscape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn addition to its home base, the organization is laying groundwork for expansion, with future editions under consideration in\u00a0Mexico, and building on its existing partnership in\u00a0AlUla, Saudi Arabia, where\u00a0Desert X AlUla 2026\u00a0will return from\u00a0January 16 to February 28\u00a0under the theme\u00a0Space Without Measure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSpace Without Measure, the fourth chapter of its partnership with Arts AlUla, will run from January 16 through February 28 of 2026.\u00a0\u00a0The show will present 10 new site-specific works inspired by the poetry of Kahlil Gibran, and conceived by Saudi and international artists under the direction of Neville Wakefield and Raneem Farsi, joined by two yet to be announced guest curators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe 2027 anniversary comes amid a broader cultural reorientation toward the desert. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/palm-springs-art-museum\/\" id=\"auto-tag_palm-springs-art-museum\" data-tag=\"palm-springs-art-museum\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Palm Springs Art Museum<\/a>\u00a0recently named a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/eye\/people\/louis-vuitton-palm-springs-art-museum-chief-curator-christine-vendredi-new-role-vision-1236399542\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new director<\/a>, Christine Vendredi,\u00a0\u00a0who before joining the museum was\u00a0the global director of\u00a0art, culture and heritage, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/louis-vuitton\/\" id=\"auto-tag_louis-vuitton\" data-tag=\"louis-vuitton\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Louis Vuitton<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.highdesertartfair.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">High Desert Art Fair\u00a0<\/a>is set to launch in Joshua Tree\u2019s Pioneertown with a roster of galleries that will be announced in January and performances by Mark Mothersbaugh and Beastie Boys collaborator Money Mark, and\u00a0Coachella\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/music\/news\/coachella-2026-sells-out-both-weekends-after-lineup-reveal-1236526627\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sold out<\/a>\u00a0for the first time in years \u2014 there are signs of a region emerging as an art-world destination beyond traditional coastal hubs and a deeper entanglement of the art, culture, and fashion worlds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWith more than\u00a0130 commissioned artists\u00a0and\u00a0two million visitors\u00a0since its founding, Desert X has become one of the world\u2019s most visible public art initiatives. The upcoming edition may just aim to consolidate that reputation and position the desert as a new center of artistic gravity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cFor ten years, we\u2019ve welcomed the public to encounter ambitious works outside of the traditional art spaces\u2014projects that reshape how we understand this landscape and the histories held within it,\u201d Jenny Gil, Desert X\u2019s executive director, told ARTnews over email. \u201cThese artists invite visitors to step into the desert not as spectators, but as participants.
