{"id":180179,"date":"2025-11-14T10:51:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T10:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/180179\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T10:51:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T10:51:10","slug":"irelands-shoulder-season-festivals-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/180179\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland\u2019s shoulder season festivals \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Musicians, designers, dancers and writers across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\">Ireland<\/a> are busy curating arts festivals to energise small towns and villages over the winter season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Design Kenmare Festival (DKF), Dingle Literary Festival, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dingle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dingle\/\">Dingle\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/other-voices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/other-voices\/\">Other Voices<\/a> are some of the festivals kicking off in the southwest this month, as the tourism season closes, while later in December pubs and halls in Gweedore, Co <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donegal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donegal\/\">Donegal<\/a> will come alive with traditional Irish music during Scoil Gheimhridh (winter School).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Eamonn O\u2019Sullivan, a graphic designer who relocated back home to Kenmare from Dublin with his young family seven years ago, has found a vibrant design community there which has curated the inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designkenmare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.designkenmare.com\/\">DKF<\/a> this weekend (November 14th-16th).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhat Dingle\u2019s Other Voices has done for music, we\u2019d like to do for design,\u201d O\u2019Sullivan says. \u201cKenmare has hospitality and tourism, but we don\u2019t really have factories, so [craft and design] is an area that\u2019s growing all the time and contributing to the economy, and the community works together as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Kenmare-based graphic designer Eamonn O&#x2019;Sullivan\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/KXPFHMEIUVBSHLRHC7Y44J36ZY.jpeg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"1200\"\/>Kenmare-based graphic designer Eamonn O\u2019Sullivan <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe wanted to highlight that, and also to show students and young people that if you\u2019re from rural areas there are opportunities there in these fields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kenmare will transform into a hub of ideas as TV architect Amanda Bone, interior designers Bryan O\u2019Sullivan and Roisin Lafferty and artist Maser join panel discussions on topics such as sustainable design, timeless design, and the evolving marketplace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Further west, in Dingle, Hannah Bulger and her committee of volunteers have curated this year\u2019s bilingual <a href=\"https:\/\/dinglelit.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/dinglelit.ie\/\">Dingle Literary Festival<\/a> (November 21st-23rd) which will see actor Gabriel Byrne speak about his favourite books, as well as hosting talks by Palestinian writer Karim Kattan, Sarah Moss, Hugo Hamilton, Karl Geary and Elaine Feeney. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe like to think of it as a cosy, intimate conversation festival,\u201d Bulger, the festival\u2019s director, says. \u201cThe conversations you see on the stage, you feel they can run over into the pub and into the cafe, especially after seeing the interaction between the authors on stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dingle Literary Festival and the town\u2019s other arts festivals help to bridge the economic gap between the end of the tourism season and Christmas, Bulger says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cLast year more than 2,000 people came here for it. I would hope it\u2019s a boon for the town because it\u2019s located all throughout the town, like Other Voices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEvery January, we start the planning, and each member of the committee comes with their own ideas or authors that they\u2019d love to see, and we work from there. It\u2019s a very ego-less project on the part of the committee. You definitely master the art of the follow-up email.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Deeper into the winter season, Gweedore in northwest Donegal comes alive with cosy traditional Irish music sessions and workshops during <a href=\"https:\/\/scoilgheimhridh.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/scoilgheimhridh.com\/\">Scoil Gheimhridh<\/a> (December 27th-January 1st), which is now entering its 31st year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Scoil Gheimhridh, now in its 31st year, takes place in Gweedore, Co Donegal. Photograph: Claire Loughran <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cathal \u00d3 Curr\u00e1in, one of the organisers, says: \u201cEvery year, we have 220 students learning in workshops. There are beginner classes in tin whistle and fiddle, and then we have sessions all around the pubs.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u00d3 Curr\u00e1in explains: \u201cThe young kids from the area get to learn from the best musicians in the industry. We pride ourselves on being immersive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Community involvement is also encouraged at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leitrimdanceproject.com\/leitrimdancefestival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.leitrimdanceproject.com\/leitrimdancefestival\">Leitrim Dance Festival<\/a> (April 9th-12th), which aims to reignite old-style, or sean n\u00f3s, dancing and create space for it atat traditional music sessions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"The community c&#xE9;il&#xED; in Carrick-on-Shannon during Leitrim Dance Festival. Photograph: C\u00edan Flynn <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A member of the festival\u2019s organising committee, Edqina Guckian, says: \u201cThere\u2019s a big movement happening in dance: to dance for joy and to have a community dance. Irish step dancing can be very competitive, and for more traditional dancing there are two competitions \u2013 the fleadh and the oireachtas \u2013 where maybe people feel the pressure of the competition and they dance for the judges and not for themselve.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/stage\/2025\/09\/03\/sean-nos-dancer-edwina-guckian-i-have-very-bad-eyesight-which-comes-in-really-useful-as-i-cant-see-the-audience\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sean-n\u00f3s dancer Edwina Guckian: \u2018I have very bad eyesight \u2013 which comes in really useful, as I can\u2019t see the audience\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Guckian is hoping to transform local farmers\u2019 marts, which she says are \u201cnatural amphitheatres\u201d, into music venues, with dancer-musician pairings performing live next April, she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe hope is that the musicians and dancers would sit in the ring while the audience surrounds them. Leitrim is rural, there isn\u2019t really a corner of Leitrim that\u2019s modern, and we can\u2019t always be in theatres.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In Schull in west Cork, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastnetfilmfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fastnetfilmfestival.com\/\">Fastnet Film Festival<\/a> (May 20th-24th) now attracts up to 8,000 people to the small village every year, having started in the form of a free screening night as part of the village\u2019s former arts festival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hilary McCarthy, who works on the festival\u2019s communications and programming, says it now has full-time employees, yearly prize money of \u20ac23,500, and gets submissions from up to 700 film-makers from about 50 countries every year. Yet the atmosphere remains relaxed during the festival, which occurs during tourism\u2019s shoulder season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe don\u2019t have any red carpet. The festival has opened up an industry. Volunteers who came down to help at the festival are now employed locally,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Back in Kenmare, craftsmanship and design will take centre stage this weekend. Interior designer Bryan O\u2019Sullivan, who has designed interiors for clients including New York\u2019s The Frick Museum and London\u2019s Claridges restaurant, says handmade pieces by Irish craftworkers and designers often elevate his projects and create talking points for his clients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere is amazing talent in Ireland,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019ve had stuff shipped from Ireland all the time.
