{"id":180398,"date":"2025-11-14T13:47:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T13:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/180398\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T13:47:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T13:47:15","slug":"top-economists-call-on-world-leaders-to-set-up-an-international-panel-on-inequality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/180398\/","title":{"rendered":"Top economists call on world leaders to set up an international panel on inequality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">CAPE TOWN, South Africa &#8212; Hundreds of top economists and other experts, including former U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, called on Friday for the world to set up an independent international panel on <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/wealth-inequality-africa-g20-richest-9083e41d1c2e9207f1b4dbd7ab6d8cf9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">income and wealth inequality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The call in an open letter came before the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/group-of-20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Group of 20 summit<\/a> in South Africa next weekend, when a report on global inequality chaired by Nobel Prize-winning American economist Joseph Stiglitz is due to be presented to world leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">That report, which was released this month, said that the world is facing an inequality emergency as well as a climate emergency, leading to more political instability and conflicts, and \u201cdecreased confidence in democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Between 2000 and 2024, the richest 1% captured 41% of all new wealth created in the world, the report said. Meanwhile, one in four people globally \u2014 around 2.3 billion people \u2014 now face moderate or severe food insecurity, meaning they regularly skip meals.
