However, the order doesn\u2019t exempt the goods entirely from tariffs, CNN reported.<\/p>\n<p>For example, tomatoes from Mexico, a major supplier to the US, will continue to be tariffed at 17 percent. That rate took effect in July after a nearly three-decade-old trade agreement expired. <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/topic\/tomato-price\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Tomato\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tomato <\/a>prices increased almost immediately after those tariffs were put in place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also Read<\/strong> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/us-news\/trumps-2-000-tariff-dividend-could-be-limited-to-families-earning-under-100k-treasury-secretary-bessent-hints-11762978247372.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$2,000 tariff dividend may skip high-income families, Treasury Secy suggests<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The CNN report added that many of the commodities that will no longer face \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs have seen some of the biggest price increases since Trump took office, in part because of tariffs he imposed and a lack of sufficient domestic supply.<\/p>\n<p>In previewing Friday\u2019s executive order, <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/us-news\/trumps-2-000-tariff-dividend-could-be-limited-to-families-earning-under-100k-treasury-secretary-bessent-hints-11762978247372.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent <\/a>said earlier this week the moves targeted goods \u201cwe don\u2019t grow here in the United States,\u201d referring to coffee and bananas. (While coffee is grown in some parts of the country, it\u2019s mostly imported.<\/p>\n<p>What did Trump say?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just did a little bit of a rollback on some foods like coffee,\u201d Trump said aboard Air Force One as he flew to Florida hours after the tariff announcement was made.<\/p>\n<p>Pressed on his tariffs helping to increase consumer prices, Trump acknowledged, \u201cI say they may, in some cases&#8221; have that effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut to a large extent they\u2019ve been borne by other countries,\u201d the president was quoted by the Assocated Press as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Why did Trump drop tariffs?<\/p>\n<p>The development came in response to pressure from consumers who are struggling with high prices.<\/p>\n<p>In off-year elections this month, voters economic concerns as their top issue, resulting in big wins for Democrats in races in Virginia and New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>They expressed frustrations with the state of the economy in exit polls earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also Read<\/strong> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/from-h-1b-tariff-on-india-to-foreign-students-trumps-change-of-heart-within-the-first-year-of-second-term-11762961987538.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">H1B, tariffs, foreign students: Trump backtracking from MAGA agenda in 2nd term?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The president signed the order after announcing framework agreements with Argentina, Ecuador, El Salvador and Guatemala that are designed to ease import levies on agricultural products from those countries.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, inflation \u2014 despite Trump&#8217;s pronouncements that it has vanished since he took office in January \u2014 remains elevated, further increasing pressure on US consumers.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/topic\/donald-trump-administration\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Trump administration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trump administration <\/a>has insisted that its tariffs had helped fill government coffers and weren&#8217;t a major factor in higher prices at grocery stores around the country.<\/p>\n<p>But Democrats were quick to paint Friday&#8217;s move as an acknowledgement that Trump&#8217;s policies were hurting American pocketbooks.<\/p>\n<p>Trump tariffs<\/p>\n<p>Trump slapped tariffs on most countries around the globe in April. He and his administration still say that tariffs don\u2019t increase consumer prices, despite economic evidence to the contrary.<\/p>\n<p>Record-high beef prices have been a particular concern, and Trump had said he intended to take action to try and lower them.
