bird flu in flocks after three confirmed outbreaks early in the high-risk period, the Minister for Agriculture has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/martin-heydon\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/martin-heydon\/\">Martin Heydon<\/a> said it was of concern that the outbreaks had been confirmed early in the high-risk period for avian influenza, which runs from October until April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Heydon was speaking at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\">Fine Gael<\/a> Agriculture and Rural Affairs Development Conference being held in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kildare\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kildare\/\">Co Kildare<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt is a concern that we\u2019ve had those three outbreaks relatively early in that high-risk period,\u201d he said on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBut we know and have known for some time that it is very prevalent in our wild bird population, as we saw in Fota Wildlife Park and beyond, and the impacts that that can have.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSo we continue to monitor this, and our message is very clear to people that, first and foremost, properly cooked poultry meat and eggs are perfectly safe to eat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe are working really closely with industry to protect and make sure that the high quality, safe, nutritious Irish poultry products \u2013 from chicken to duck to turkeys coming up to Christmas \u2013 are being protected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFinally, a message to the general public: where they see sick or dead birds, not to handle them, but to instead report them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph outbreaks have been confirmed in commercial turkey flocks in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/carlow\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/carlow\/\">Co Carlow<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/meath\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/meath\/\">Co Meath<\/a> and another near Clontibret, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/monaghan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/monaghan\/\">Co Monaghan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fota Wildlife Park in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\">Cork<\/a> has also been closed until the end of the month because of an outbreak among its animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOn the area of avian influenza, we\u2019ve had three outbreaks in commercial flocks at this stage, initially in Carlow, then in Meath and most recently in Monaghan,\u201d Mr Heydon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI want to pay sympathy to those individual flock owners, because it is a really difficult space to be in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He paid tribute to the industry, which has \u201cworked really closely\u201d to implement measures aimed at preventing further outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI have great officials throughout my regional veterinary offices working closely with private practitioners in the veterinary side and the collaboration across industry, and with my team, has really helped in terms of implementing all the mandatory biosecurity measures which are absolutely critical, adhering to the mandatory housing order which I introduced last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cObviously I work very closely with my colleague, minister [Andrew] Muir, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/northern-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/northern-ireland\/\">Northern Ireland<\/a>, because Ireland is the one epidemiological island when it comes to diseases like this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSo we all work really together to protect what is a very vital industry for rural Ireland, and it is the start of the higher-risk
