{"id":183611,"date":"2025-11-16T12:30:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-16T12:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/183611\/"},"modified":"2025-11-16T12:30:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-16T12:30:11","slug":"inside-bhutans-us100-billion-plan-to-build-happy-singapore-inspired-economic-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/183611\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside Bhutan\u2019s US$100 billion plan to build \u2018happy\u2019 Singapore-inspired economic hub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/bhutan?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bhutan<\/a> is a nation that prides itself on happiness over productivity, being the only net negative emission country and reluctantly democratising only after its monarch introduced the system in a time of peace, but the tides are changing for the Land of the Thunder Dragon.Amid high youth unemployment and an exodus of talent \u2013 especially to <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/australia?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Australia<\/a> \u2013 the landlocked kingdom of just under 800,000 people bordering giants <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/india?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">India<\/a> and <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">China<\/a>, is banking on a new \u201cone country, two systems\u201d special administrative region to boost its economy while maintaining the mindfulness and sustainability ethos at the core of Bhutanese culture.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Speaking to This Week in Asia earlier this week in the capital Thimphu, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay said the country\u2019s quick development resulted in 99 per cent literacy rates within a generation and a well-educated demographic of English-speaking youth who were able to get jobs abroad.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cNow our challenge, obviously, has to be to create the conditions for them to work here, where our jobs are relatively competitive to the jobs that they can get in Australia. That will keep our youth here, and that will bring the youth who are in Australia back to Bhutan, and hence the Gelephu Mindfulness City,\u201d Tobgay said during Bhutan\u2019s Global Peace Prayer Festival, held from November 4 to 17.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay speaks to This Week in Asia reporter Jean Iau.
