{"id":183655,"date":"2025-11-16T13:08:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-16T13:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/183655\/"},"modified":"2025-11-16T13:08:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-16T13:08:08","slug":"84-louth-men-diagnosed-with-prostate-cancer-each-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/183655\/","title":{"rendered":"84 Louth men diagnosed with prostate cancer each year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">84 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dundalkdemocrat.ie\/section\/113\/news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Louth<\/a>\u00a0men, on average, face a prostate cancer diagnosis each year, according to National Cancer Registry of Ireland &#8211; and half of those who undergo prostate cancer treatment will go on to experience urinary incontinence<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(UI).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These figures,\u00a0calculated using national cancer statistics from the National Cancer Registry of Ireland, form the backdrop to the launch of\u00a0<strong>\u2018<\/strong>Dispose with Dignity\u2019, a new campaign from hygiene services company phs Group, supported by the Irish Cancer Society and the Irish Men\u2019s Sheds Association.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative aims to break the stigma surrounding male incontinence and improve access to hygiene facilities, such as sanitary bins and vending products, in men\u2019s public toilets nationwide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New research released as part of the campaign reveals that a<b>\u00a0<\/b>lack of suitable toilet facilities and low awareness about male urinary incontinence (UI) are having a serious impact on men\u2019s mental health and daily lives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read also:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dundalkdemocrat.ie\/news\/local-news\/1937155\/photos-visitors-flock-to-mid-louth-for-ardees-first-ferdia-festival.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">PHOTOS: Visitors flock to mid-Louth for Ardee\u2019s first Ferdia Festival<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the European Association of Urology,\u00a0half of all men who undergo prostate removal go on to experience UI, underscoring the urgent need for better understanding and facilities across Ireland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 702 men surveyed as part of PHS study:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half (52 per cent) feel anxious about going out in public due to a lack of suitable toilet facilities.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost two-thirds (65 per cent) have been negatively affected by not being able to find a toilet, and 14 per cent report feeling depressed about how their life has changed.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among younger men (18\u201334), depression rises to 24 per cent and anxiety is felt by 41 per cent.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over half (54 per cent) have struggled to find a bin suitable for disposing of incontinence pads, with nearly half (46 per cent) resorting to using disabled toilets or flushing products away (18 per cent).<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A further 72 per cent say public understanding of the condition remains poor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a business, we\u2019re very proud to shine a light on issues others shy away from and are deeply committed to breaking down barriers for men,\u201d said Eoin Foley, managing director of phs Group Ireland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThrough Dispose with Dignity\u00a0we\u2019re tackling the stigma around male incontinence head-on, raising much-needed awareness, and calling for solid measures that can give men back the independence and lives they once knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among those supporting the campaign is\u00a0Gerry Connolly, 69, a semi-retired salesman from Donegal who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2013. With a job that takes him on the road a lot Gerry has to regularly use public washrooms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had surgery to remove my prostate, and nobody really warned me what incontinence would be like afterwards. It was a shock.\u00a0For months I would wet myself when I stood up, coughed or laughed. It was very frustrating and such unfamiliar territory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI felt embarrassed about it, even though I know I shouldn\u2019t have. I used to\u00a0make any excuse not to leave the house and I rarely left it for months.\u00a0I think the lack of awareness about it is part of that &#8211; that nobody knows this can be a side-effect of prostate cancer surgery, and that\u2019s hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gerry believes that access to bins in men\u2019s cubicles would make life a whole lot easier.\u00a0\u201cIf there\u2019d been sanitary bins in men\u2019s toilets, maybe I\u2019d have felt I had options &#8211; somewhere private to change a pad and get on with my day,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cEven now, I still use a pad. Having a bin in the cubicle would make a huge difference. It\u2019s about dignity, not shame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He hopes that visible facilities will also help raise awareness: \u201cIf people see bins for men, it\u2019ll start conversations and remind more men to get tested early.
