{"id":184051,"date":"2025-11-16T18:41:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-16T18:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/184051\/"},"modified":"2025-11-16T18:41:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-16T18:41:09","slug":"venture-capital-recovers-in-third-quarter-but-early-deals-falter-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/184051\/","title":{"rendered":"Venture capital recovers in third quarter but early deals falter \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish technology companies saw venture capital backing rise 8 per cent in the third quarter of the year, new data shows, as the impact of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\">US tariffs<\/a> on international investors faded. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But funding for the first nine months of the year was down 10 per cent year on year, data compiled by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-venture-capital-association\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-venture-capital-association\/\">Irish Venture Capital Association<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/IVCA\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/IVCA\/\">IVCA<\/a>) said, and early deals suffered. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A total of \u20ac207.9 million was ploughed into Irish small and medium-sized enterprises in the third quarter, according to the Irish Venture Capital Association Venture Pulse survey, published in association with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/william-fry\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/william-fry\/\">William Fry<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That followed a \u201cdismal\u201d second quarter, when funding dropped to its lowest in 10 years, following the US announcement of Liberation Day tariff plans in April, shaking international investor confidence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the latest data indicated investors had started to return to the market, with backing from overseas investors more than doubling to \u20ac146.7 million in the current quarter compared with \u20ac69.5 million in the second quarter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHopefully we are starting to see some confidence and stability return to the market, but it remains a challenging time for early-stage companies,\u201d said IVCA chairperson Caroline Gaynor. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gaps also remained in some areas in the third quarter, with deals for seed funding and those under \u20ac1 million yielding less positive results. Year on year, seed rounds fell by 30 per cent to \u20ac23.4 million, and by 31 per cent for the first nine months of the year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Total funding for the first nine months stood at \u20ac853.4 million, down from \u20ac945.3 million in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe process for deploying the Government\u2019s \u20ac250 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/enterprise-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/enterprise-ireland\/\">Enterprise Ireland<\/a> Seed and Venture Capital Scheme 2025-2029 is well under way,\u201d said IVCA director general Sarah-Jane Larkin. \u201cWe are optimistic that the environment for very early stage Irish companies seeking first-round funding will pick up in the first half of next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Deals in the \u20ac1 million to \u20ac5 million range accounted for 30 out of the 39 transactions in the quarter, with those in the \u20ac1 million to \u20ac3 million up 35 per cent year on year.
