Further stoppages in recent weeks hit around 7,500 passengers on flights between Manchester and New York, Florida and Barbados.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Members of the Aer Lingus executive team held a business briefing with its 200 staff at the Manchester base on Monday morning, during which a presentation was given outlining its underperformance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A further communication issued to staff, which has been seen by The Irish Times, said closure of the base was under consideration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDespite all of the work and best efforts of the team, the Manchester long-haul operating margin performance continues to significantly lag behind that of Aer Lingus\u2019s Irish long-haul operating margin,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/11\/08\/manchester-fails-to-live-up-to-aer-lingus-expectations\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Manchester fails to live up to Aer Lingus expectationsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis makes it difficult to justify further investment in the Manchester base and raises the question as to whether there are potentially better alternative uses of the two aircraft that are in the Manchester base. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis situation has prompted a necessary consideration of the long-term viability of the Manchester base. Colleagues at the Manchester base were advised that we will now enter into a collective consultation process with their representatives. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>Irish business grandee Gary McGann on working with Michael Smurfit, the fall of Anglo Irish and the current state of the Irish economy<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis process will explore all the options in respect of the base. However, staff were also advised that it will also include the possibility of a base closure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is understood the base has been under scrutiny for some time, and that while underperformance has been an issue, the pay dispute with cabin crew has put further strain on the airline\u2019s patience with the base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Embleton publicly said Manchester was \u201cnot performing\u201d at a level that makes it attractive for further investment in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe base is performing lower than elsewhere in Aer Lingus, and Aer Lingus is performing lower than elsewhere in IAG, so it\u2019s not performing at a level that makes it attractive for investment,\u201d she said in an interview with The Irish Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/11\/07\/aer-lingus-ceo-says-manchester-base-is-underperforming-as-cabin-crew-plan-more-strikes\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aer Lingus CEO says Manchester base is underperforming as cabin crew plan more strikesOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cManchester has to be cost competitive. The airline needs to be cost competitive and it needs to perform financially to justify the asset allocation.
