{"id":186263,"date":"2025-11-18T01:27:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-18T01:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/186263\/"},"modified":"2025-11-18T01:27:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T01:27:13","slug":"government-import-export-data-can-show-impact-of-trumps-tariffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/186263\/","title":{"rendered":"Government import, export data can show impact of Trump&#8217;s tariffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday is when we\u2019re supposed to learn more about how imports and exports have been faring from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, though the 43-day government shutdown may still delay that data release.<\/p>\n<p>Until recently, this wasn\u2019t data that Tyler Schipper, an associate professor of economics at the University of St. Thomas, paid all that much attention to. <\/p>\n<p>But lately, with tariffs in the news, \u201cimport prices have been one of the reports that people have been going to, and, likewise, that&#8217;s one of the probably top two or three reports that I am waiting to see for the backlog,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The BLS data measures import prices before tariffs are applied. That can point to <a title=\"\" class=\"interallink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/story\/2025\/07\/17\/who-is-paying-for-tariffs-the-us-or-foreign-exporters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who might be absorbing the cost of the import taxes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>If import prices go up, \u201cthat seems to suggest that foreign exporters are not actually doing much cost-sharing, that they are passing most of the prices of tariffs onto the U.S.,\u201d Schipper said.<\/p>\n<p>Import prices <a title=\"\" class=\"interallink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/story\/2025\/11\/10\/why-havent-tariffs-caused-prices-to-rise-much\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also affect consumers<\/a>, per Ryan Monarch at Syracuse University. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTen percent of all their expenditures are on imported products. And so sometimes import prices will be something that is moving overall inflation numbers around,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Missing the September import data during the shutdown has made it harder to understand what\u2019s going on, according to Jason Miller, a professor at Michigan State University.
