It is around 27 miles (43 kilometers) across at its widest point and is named after a large pyramid-like rock formation located on a small island in the lake&#8217;s southern half.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"1a5014a4-5a1d-4497-bde0-196b6315facc-2\">The lake is fed by a single river, but it is endorheic, meaning it has no outflow. As a result, it has a much higher salinity than most lakes, because excess water evaporates away, leaving its dissolved salts behind. The lake is also slightly alkaline and has a pH of around 9, which is roughly equivalent to baking soda.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"14f3bce7-ce6d-4fca-8977-eaa7884492dc\">Pyramid Lake experiences annual algal blooms between September and October, due to warmer temperatures and increased nutrient availability. The predominant algal species is Nodularia spumigena, which is a blue-green, nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria that thrives in high-salinity waters, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/153466\/pyramid-lake-in-bloom\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/153466\/pyramid-lake-in-bloom\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA&#8217;s Earth Observatory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But 2024&#8217;s bloom, captured in this satellite image, was one of the most extreme in recent memory. It peaked on Oct. 15, around a week after this photo was taken. During the 2024 bloom, local authorities <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=944807254356712&amp;set=pb.100064823373179.-2207520000\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=944807254356712&amp;set=pb.100064823373179.-2207520000\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">warned people<\/a> to not let their pets anywhere near the water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Pyramid Lake was once part of a much larger, prehistoric body of water, known as Lake Lahontan, which covered an area of around 8,000 square miles (21,000 square km) \u2014 around 45 times larger than Pyramid Lake.<\/p>\n<p>This ancient lake was hit by climate change at the end of the last ice age, or <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/40311-pleistocene-epoch.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/40311-pleistocene-epoch.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pleistocene epoch<\/a>, which ended around 12,000 years ago. Around 3,000 years later, Lahontan had essentially disappeared, leaving Pyramid Lake as its largest remaining remnant.<\/p>\n<p id=\"937620d6-1680-4bae-afbb-bf855cc8aec3\">Today, Pyramid Lake is known for a series of striking pillar-like calcium carbonate features, known as tufas, which grew from Lake Lahontan&#8217;s receding waters between 26,000 and 13,000 years ago, according to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/fs\/2004\/3044\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/fs\/2004\/3044\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. Geological Survey<\/a>. The researchers theorized that the cyanobacteria once bloomed in Lake Lahontan and may have persisted in its remaining waters ever since.<\/p>\n<p>Pyramid Lake is also home to the cui-ui (Chasmistes cujus) \u2014 an endangered species of suckerfish that isn&#8217;t found anywhere else on Earth.
