The United Nations<\/a> Security Council on Monday voted to adopt a US<\/a>-drafted resolution endorsing president Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s plan to end the war in Gaza<\/a> and authorising an international stabilisation force for the Palestinian<\/a> enclave.<\/p>\n

Israel<\/a> and the Palestinian militant group Hamas<\/a> agreed last month to the first phase of Mr Trump\u2019s 20-point plan for Gaza<\/a> \u2013 a ceasefire in their two-year war and a hostage-release deal \u2013 but the UN resolution is seen as vital to legitimising a transitional governance body and reassuring countries that are considering sending troops to Gaza.<\/p>\n

The text of the resolution says member states can take part in the Trump-led board of peace envisioned as a transitional authority that would oversee reconstruction and economic recovery of Gaza. It also authorises the international stabilisation force, which would ensure a process of demilitarising Gaza, including by decommissioning weapons and destroying military infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Hamas, in a statement, reiterated that it will not disarm and argued that its fight against Israel is legitimate resistance, potentially pitting the militant group against the international force authorised by the resolution.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe resolution imposes an international guardianship mechanism on the Gaza Strip, which our people and their factions reject,\u201d Hamas said in its statement, issued after the adoption of the resolution.<\/p>\n

Late on Monday night, Mr Trump said the new board of peace, which he will chair, will include the \u201cmost powerful and respected\u201d world leaders.<\/p>\n

In a post on Truth Social, he said: \u201cCongratulations to the World on the incredible Vote of the United Nations Security Council, just moments ago, acknowledging and endorsing the BOARD OF PEACE, which will be chaired by me, and include the most powerful and respected Leaders throughout the World. This will go down as one of the biggest approvals in the History of the United Nations, will lead to further Peace all over the World, and is a moment of true Historic proportion!\u201d<\/p>\n

Mike Waltz, the US ambassador to the UN, said the resolution, which includes Mr Trump\u2019s 20-point plan as an annex, \u201ccharts a possible pathway for Palestinian self-determination … where rockets will give way to olive branches and there is a chance to agree on a political horizon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt dismantles Hamas\u2019 grip, it ensures Gaza rises free from terror\u2019s shadow, prosperous and secure,\u201d Mr Waltz told the council in advance of the vote.<\/p>\n

Russia<\/a>, which holds a veto on the Security Council, earlier signalled potential opposition to the resolution but abstained from the vote, allowing the resolution to pass. China also abstained.<\/p>\n

The Palestinian Authority issued a statement welcoming the resolution, and said it is ready to take part in its implementation. Diplomats said the authority\u2019s endorsement of the resolution last week was key to preventing a Russian veto.<\/p>\n

The resolution has proven controversial in Israel because it references a future possibility of statehood for the Palestinians.<\/p>\n

The resolution\u2019s text says that \u201cconditions may finally be in place for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood\u201d once the Palestinian Authority has carried out a reform program and Gaza\u2019s redevelopment has advanced.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States will establish a dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians to agree on a political horizon for peaceful and prosperous coexistence,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n
