{"id":187081,"date":"2025-11-18T12:26:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-18T12:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/187081\/"},"modified":"2025-11-18T12:26:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T12:26:12","slug":"poland-railway-blast-was-unprecedented-act-of-sabotage-says-donald-tusk-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/187081\/","title":{"rendered":"Poland railway blast was \u2018unprecedented act of sabotage\u2019, says Donald Tusk \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/poland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/poland\">Poland<\/a>\u2019s prime minister, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-tusk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-tusk\/\">Donald Tusk<\/a>, has described an explosion along a section of railway line used for deliveries to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war\/\">Ukraine<\/a> as an \u201cunprecedented act of sabotage\u201d that could have led to disaster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There were no casualties from the incident on the line from Warsaw to Lublin, but the consequences could have been catastrophic if the gap in the tracks had caused a train travelling at full speed to derail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cUnfortunately, there is no doubt that we are dealing with an act of sabotage. Fortunately, there was no tragedy, but the matter is nonetheless very serious,\u201d Mr Tusk said on Monday, after visiting the scene 97km from Warsaw, near the village of Mika.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He described the attack as \u201can attempt to destabilise and destroy railway infrastructure, which could have led to a rail disaster\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Tusk said Polish authorities had already launched an investigation into the blast as well as another incident over the weekend that also appeared to involve rail sabotage. \u201cJust like in previous cases of this kind, we will catch the perpetrators, regardless of who their backers are,\u201d said Tusk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The attack comes amid a campaign of sabotage in Poland and other European countries that has been attributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\">Russian<\/a> security services, seeking to sow chaos and discord in Europe over support for Ukraine\u2019s war effort. In Poland, this has included fires and explosions at shopping malls and other sites. Photograph: Chancellery of the prime minister via Getty Images <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Police said someone had reported hearing an explosion late on Saturday evening but officers performed checks and did not find anything. The damaged section of track was spotted by the driver of a regional train early on Sunday morning, who managed to make an emergency stop before reaching it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dariusz Grajda, deputy chief executive officer of Polish State Railways, told Polish television that one of the previous trains had reported an issue with the track, which meant the train that stopped had been briefed on the problem and was travelling slowly enough to stop in time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The second incident took place near the town of Pu\u0142awy on Sunday evening, when a train carrying 475 passengers was forced to make an emergency stop after damage to overhead power lines, and a metal brace was found on the tracks. There were also claims of a metal device found on the tracks.
