{"id":188547,"date":"2025-11-19T07:18:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T07:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/188547\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T07:18:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T07:18:11","slug":"government-departments-seek-over-e2bn-more-for-additional-costs-this-year-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/188547\/","title":{"rendered":"Government departments seek over \u20ac2bn more for additional costs this year \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\">Government<\/a> departments will need more than \u20ac2 billion in additional funding this year to cover costs that exceeded their initial budgets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-education\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-education\/\">Department of Education<\/a> alone will require a supplementary estimate of \u20ac567 million while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-health\/\">Department of Health<\/a> will need an additional \u20ac302 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Department of Social Protection, the Department of Children and the Department of Transport will each require more than \u20ac200 million in additional funding to be approved by the D\u00e1il.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Figures for the Department of Education indicate that \u20ac180 million more in funding will be needed over its initial estimate to cover the salaries of primary schoolteachers and \u20ac135 million more to pay the wages of special needs assistants. An additional \u20ac96 million will be needed for the school transport service. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Department of Health said that under a funding deal agreed with the Department of Public Expenditure last year, \u20ac250 million was to be generated through savings in the health service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis has been challenging to achieve in 2025, in addition to the substantial \u20ac633 million cumulative savings target already incorporated into the 2025 budget allocation,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Department of Health also said it would provide \u20ac40 million in funding to ensure that the accumulated accounting deficits of voluntary hospitals do not increase during 2025. However, the money is conditional on the hospitals agreeing reforms and introducing new financial information systems about which some institutions are not happy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt is a requirement that the voluntary hospitals implement improved governance arrangements and stricter adherence to expenditure and workforce limits,\u201d the department said.<b> <\/b>\u201cThis includes reforms in areas such as financial governance measures, recruitment controls, implementation of new rostering arrangements, improvements in utilisation of diagnostic equipment, agreement on implementation of national IT systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/18\/government-considering-longer-wait-times-for-citizenship-amid-uk-asylum-system-overhaul\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Longer wait time for Irish citizenship under consideration as UK overhauls asylum systemOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Minister for Justice Jim O&#x2019;Callaghan. Photograph: Alan Betson<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-ocallaghan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-ocallaghan\/\">Jim O\u2019Callaghan<\/a> told the Oireachtas Committee on Justice on Tuesday that more than \u20ac20 million in additional funding for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\">An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na<\/a> would be required this year to support overtime requirements for policing recent public order incidents and operational costs for increased immigration-related activity and deportations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said the supplementary \u20ac20.4 million on top of the \u20ac2.3 billion allocation to An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na for 2025 reflected the Government\u2019s commitment \u201cto keep communities safe\u201d and to ensure frontline garda\u00ed had the requisite resources to operate effectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Minister said that supplementary estimates of more than \u20ac94 million for 2025 has been approved for An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na, the Irish Prison Service, the Courts Service and the Department of Justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The \u20ac94.28 million included \u20ac20.4 million for An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na; \u20ac27.86 million for the Irish Prison Service; \u20ac46 million for the Department of Justice and \u20ac1,000 for the Courts Service. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Department of Social Protection will require an additional \u20ac261 million in funding for this year.
