{"id":189258,"date":"2025-11-19T16:29:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T16:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/189258\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T16:29:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T16:29:08","slug":"dublin-metrolink-construction-will-need-8000-workers-committee-told-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/189258\/","title":{"rendered":"Dublin MetroLink construction will need 8,000 workers, committee told \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin\u2019s<\/a> planned new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/metrolink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/metrolink\/\">metro system<\/a> will need about 8,000 workers to construct, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oireachtas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oireachtas\/\">Oireachtas<\/a> committee has been told.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">MetroLink programme director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/transport\/2024\/06\/25\/dublin-metrolink-project-director-to-be-paid-550000-per-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/transport\/2024\/06\/25\/dublin-metrolink-project-director-to-be-paid-550000-per-year\/\">Sean Sweeney<\/a> said the largest contracts for the development of the 19km rail line, planned to run from south of Dublin\u2019s city centre to Swords in the north of the county, would be with international firms that were expected to bring in some personnel from abroad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere are no firms of the scale or expertise in Ireland to run those major contracts,\u201d he told the Oireachtas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/committee-on-transport-and-communications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/committee-on-transport-and-communications\/\">committee on Transport<\/a> on Wednesday. \u201cThey [the international companies] will bring a proportion of workers in and will be looking to supplement with local labour. We have done extensive Irish workforce analysis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe top line is that the Irish construction industry cannot support the construction of this project and even that is without factoring in the other major infrastructure projects that are in play at the moment as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"b-it-article-body__panel-powerup-overline\">Explainer<\/p>\n<p>What is the MetroLink?<\/p>\n<p>MetroLink is a 19km mostly underground rail line for Dublin stretching from Swords to Ranelagh.<\/p>\n<p>Stops include Swords, Dublin Airport, Ballymun, Glasnevin, O\u2019Connell Street, St Stephen\u2019s Green and ending at the Charlemont Luas stop.<\/p>\n<p>The project was first proposed over a quarter of a century ago and is expected to cost north of \u20ac10 billion.<\/p>\n<p>A trip from the city centre to the airport will take 20 minutes and the service is expected to be operational by the mid-2030s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Computer generated images of Metrolink, the planned Dublin metro train running from Swords to Ranelagh\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/RS4JT5UH6NDNHBSXJYCPITPVME.png\"  width=\"800\"\/>A computer generated image of a MetroLink service <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe think it is going to be a challenge. The constructors that I have spoken to know it is going to be a challenge. We are looking to engage with the local market but I think we are going to exhaust the local workforce before we run out of work for them,\u201d Mr Sweeney added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said a lot of work had been put into planning for the housing for the MetroLink workforce. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe are working with the Land Development Agency to see what options there are,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The rail link has 16 planned stops and will run largely underground, through both tunnelling and cut-and-cover sections of track. It will serve Dublin Airport and several locations in the city centre, as well as the increasingly populous northside suburbs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fine Gael TD Grace Boland said a programme or framework must be put in place for housing workers involved in the project, whether they be in temporary on-site accommodation or otherwise, and that it would be important to engage with the local authority in Fingal immediately to put in place a process for dealing with this issue.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Metrolink\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/RZFYUESQZZEH7O4DWSNCYCCT4I.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"1906\"\/>Source: metrolink.ie <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Sweeney said the MetroLink project was not looking at taking from existing housing plans to accommodate its workers but rather to add to those developments currently being considered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn simple terms, we have a large need. We can make a commitment to taking an amount of stock and enable developments that we are unable to get off the ground now and make them viable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lorcan O\u2019Connor, chief executive of Transport Infrastructure Ireland, said even in Dublin there were viability challenges surrounding the development of apartments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhere those are marginal, the fact we could commit to occupying those in the first few years makes those bankable for whoever might be considering their development. Ultimately, it is positive in terms of overall housing stock and allows others to concentrate on those that are viable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Sweeney said a comprehensive re-costing of the MetroLink project was under way and would be available early next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/dublin\/2025\/10\/02\/two-consortiums-will-bid-to-build-long-awaited-metrolink\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Two consortiums will bid to build long-awaited MetroLinkOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said the projected costs of the metro project in the public domain at present were based on a 2022 business case but were derived from figures going back to 2014 to 2019 that had been \u201cescalated up\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey have a lot of approximations in them.
