(Photo by David McNew\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Getty ImagesKey Facts<\/p>\n<p>Hours worked on gig platforms in 2025 have increased, even as payroll growth has slowed, suggesting more workers have taken up gig work during a cooling labor market, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gspublishing.com\/content\/research\/en\/reports\/2025\/11\/17\/d13049a6-518a-490e-b8a8-bed5a4a34fe7.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.gspublishing.com\/content\/research\/en\/reports\/2025\/11\/17\/d13049a6-518a-490e-b8a8-bed5a4a34fe7.pdf\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.gspublishing.com\/content\/research\/en\/reports\/2025\/11\/17\/d13049a6-518a-490e-b8a8-bed5a4a34fe7.pdf\" aria-label=\"report released by Goldman Sachs\">report released by Goldman Sachs<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>Goldman Sachs classified gig workers as employment that includes subsets of workers such as independent contractors, temp agency or on-call workers, or freelancers. <\/p>\n<p>The analysis showed that workers who choose to participate in the gig economy would only be able to earn 50%-65% per hour of work as they did in traditional jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/fedinprint.org\/item\/fedbwp\/97383\/original\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/fedinprint.org\/item\/fedbwp\/97383\/original\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/fedinprint.org\/item\/fedbwp\/97383\/original\" aria-label=\"Federal Reserve\u2019s Survey of Informal Work\">Federal Reserve\u2019s Survey of Informal Work<\/a> shows that 20% of all people who reported that they took a pay cut, lost their job or had their hours reduced within the prior two years took up gig work as a result.<\/p>\n<p>The Goldman Sachs report also claimed that as workers increasingly turn to gigs, the gig economy would not be able to support all who lose their jobs during a downturn because the demand for gig workers would fall as the economy weakens. <\/p>\n<p>The unemployment rate was 4.3% as of August 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/empsit.pdf#:~:text=Household%20Survey%20Data%20Both%20the%20unemployment%20rate%2C,little%20over%20the%20year.%20(See%20table%20A%2D1.)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/empsit.pdf#:~:text=Household%20Survey%20Data%20Both%20the%20unemployment%20rate%2C,little%20over%20the%20year.%20(See%20table%20A%2D1.)\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/empsit.pdf#:~:text=Household%20Survey%20Data%20Both%20the%20unemployment%20rate%2C,little%20over%20the%20year.%20(See%20table%20A%2D1.)\" aria-label=\"according\">according<\/a> to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Labor Department is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/schedule\/2025\/11_sched.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/schedule\/2025\/11_sched.htm\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/schedule\/2025\/11_sched.htm\" aria-label=\"set\">set<\/a> to release September&#8217;s jobs report Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is There Going To Be A Recession?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zacharyfolk\/2025\/11\/02\/bessent-says-some-sectors-of-economy-are-in-recession\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zacharyfolk\/2025\/11\/02\/bessent-says-some-sectors-of-economy-are-in-recession\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zacharyfolk\/2025\/11\/02\/bessent-says-some-sectors-of-economy-are-in-recession\/\" aria-label=\"said earlier this month\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said earlier this month<\/a> that he believes some \u201csectors\u201d of the economy are in a recession or at risk of one and blamed the Federal Reserve for not cutting interest rates quickly enough.
