{"id":190516,"date":"2025-11-20T09:50:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T09:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/190516\/"},"modified":"2025-11-20T09:50:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T09:50:10","slug":"former-peter-mcverry-trust-board-accused-of-putting-self-interest-ahead-of-charity-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/190516\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Peter McVerry Trust board accused of putting \u2018self-interest\u2019 ahead of charity \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The former board of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/peter-mcverry-trust\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/peter-mcverry-trust\/\">Peter McVerry Trust<\/a> will be accused of putting \u201cself-interest\u201d above the charity\u2019s best interests when a D\u00e1il committee discusses the near-collapse in 2023 of the housing and homeless body. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A meeting in Leinster House  on Thursday of the D\u00e1il <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/public-accounts-committee\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/public-accounts-committee\/\">Public Accounts Committee<\/a> will hear a damning statement from Francis Doherty, the long-time McVerry official who became chief executive shortly before the crisis brewing in its finances came to a head. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The charity was \u201chaemorrhaging cash\u201d when he took over in June 2023. He left the following October,  just before the Government gave \u20ac15 million to keep the charity afloat. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The committee will discuss a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/comptroller-and-auditor-general\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/comptroller-and-auditor-general\/\">Comptroller &amp; Auditor General (C&amp;AG)<\/a> report on the bailout that raised questions about the turmoil in the trust. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement to TDs before the meeting, Mr Doherty said the charity\u2019s then board \u201cseemed to transition from ignorance to self-preservation\u201d as troubles escalated in summer 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/housing-planning\/2025\/11\/18\/peter-mcverry-trust-on-a-journey-to-renewal-and-rehabilitation-claims-chairman\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter McVerry Trust \u2018on a journey to renewal and rehabilitation\u2019, claims chairmanOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Deirdre-Ann Barr, a solicitor who joined the board in 2020 and became chairwoman in May 2022, did not reply on Wednesday to a phone call and text message seeking comment for this piece. She resigned as chairwoman in February. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The trust is now under the control of a new board. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Doherty said: \u201cWhile long-standing small-scale creditors turned up at our offices desperate to be paid to keep their own businesses afloat, the chair of the board wrote to me with specific directions on who should be paid first: not the agencies who provided the staff we relied upon to keep services running, not the contractors working to rectify fire safety issues that had been uncovered, but two companies recently engaged to provide legal and PR advice to help the board navigate the crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He added: \u201cThe board of the trust prioritised self-interest over the best interests of the charity, put staff and service users at risk, and made my and my staff\u2019s efforts to act in the charity\u2019s best interest so much more challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Doherty succeeded Pat Doyle, who was chief executive for 18 years. Mr Doyle was invited to the committee, but signalled he has \u201cno comment\u201d on the C&amp;AG report. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/housing-planning\/2025\/10\/03\/gardai-begin-criminal-investigation-into-peter-mcverry-trust\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Garda\u00ed begin criminal investigation into Peter McVerry TrustOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Doherty worked in the trust for a decade before becoming chief executive, first in junior and mid-level roles and then as housing development and communications director in 2020. As incoming chief executive, he was invited to the trust\u2019s annual meeting on May 11th, 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI was advised by the board, and I quote, \u2018the organisation could not be handed over to you in better financial health\u2019 and they noted that the outgoing CEO had secured 18 years of \u2018clean audits\u2019,\u201d Mr Doherty said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt became clear, within weeks, that the board\u2019s representation of the charity\u2019s financial state could not have been further from the truth,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe finances and financial systems were in such a poor state that with each passing day it became clear that it was verging on total collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was in no doubt that the trust would have collapsed without decisions he made in summer 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The meeting comes days after the new McVerry board published overdue accounts for 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/11\/18\/value-of-peter-mcverry-trust-property-portfolio-downgraded-by-23m\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/11\/18\/value-of-peter-mcverry-trust-property-portfolio-downgraded-by-23m\/\">which set out a \u20ac23 million property writedown<\/a>.
