On Wednesday, senators <a href=\"https:\/\/www25.senado.leg.br\/web\/atividade\/notas-taquigraficas\/-\/notas\/s\/520510\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">indicated<\/a> they wanted to hold a vote in both houses of Congress on Nov. 27 on the vetoes \u2014 only six days after diplomats are scheduled to leave Bel\u00e9m.<\/p>\n<p>The Congress is likely to repeat its previous vote and overturn the president\u2019s vetoes, said Suely Ara\u00fajo, the former president of Brazil\u2019s government forest protection agency, now a public policy coordinator at the Climate Observatory NGO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really don&#8217;t think that Lula has power enough to stop this,\u201d she said, adding:\u201cI&#8217;m sure that we will have problems of deforestation increasing\u201d if the vetoes are struck down. This view was echoed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oc.eco.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/FBXSanchezFonseca_parecerPL2159.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a> by two of Brazil\u2019s leading experts in environmental management who said it would \u201cgenerate significant environmental degradation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ara\u00fajo said environmental groups were planning to take the issue to the Supreme Court. Mauricio Guetta, legal policy director at the campaign group Avaaz, said it would be \u201cthe worst environmental setback in our history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>POLITICO contacted two lawmakers who support agribusiness, plus the Instituto Pensar Agropecu\u00e1ria, a non-profit group that represents the sector.
