{"id":1926,"date":"2025-08-16T08:01:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T08:01:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/1926\/"},"modified":"2025-08-16T08:01:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T08:01:17","slug":"smartwatch-tech-fails-to-measure-stress-in-new-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/1926\/","title":{"rendered":"Smartwatch tech fails to measure stress in new study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"bodytext\">An ever-increasing number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/Black-Shark-GT3-debuts-as-curved-AMOLED-smartwatch-with-Bluetooth-5-3-and-AI-assistant.814417.0.html\" target=\"_self\" class=\"internal-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">smart<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/Garmin-re-releases-new-update-for-Fenix-7-and-Fenix-7-Pro-smartwatches-with-fresh-changes-and-improvements.1072355.0.html\" target=\"_self\" class=\"internal-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wearables<\/a> claim to be able to tell how well the user is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/Fitbit-smartwatches-may-get-exciting-new-feature.966376.0.html\" target=\"_self\" class=\"internal-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sleeping<\/a> and how much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/Very-affordable-boAt-Smart-Ring-Active-Plus-measures-skin-temperature-stress-and-pulse.1040189.0.html\" target=\"_self\" class=\"internal-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stress<\/a> they are under, just in case they might need to make some lifestyle changes in order to address what could be potentially pivotal health discrepancies.\u00a0&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">The smart watches or bands in question might not be accurate enough in those measurements, according to a new <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2Fabn0001013\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link-new-window\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a>.\u00a0&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">The experiment, carried out at Leiden University in the Netherlands, recruited 781 students to use the same wearable for 3 months, and to complete regular ecological momentary assessment (EMA)\u00a0surveys on subjects such as the participants&#8217; own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/Amazfit-Helio-Strap-sleep-and-heart-rate-features-improved-in-new-update.1044389.0.html\" target=\"_self\" class=\"internal-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sleep<\/a>, fatigue and stress levels at the same time.\u00a0&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">The researchers concluded that, while the subjects&#8217; EMA data &#8220;overlapped&#8221; well with those of the wearables&#8217; sensors in terms of fatigue and sleep, they diverged when it came to measuring stress.&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">It should be noted that the study only incorporated 1 wearable: the Vivosmart 4 from circa 2018, discontinued by Garmin in favor of its newer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/Garmin-Vivosmart-5-launches-for-US-149-99-with-a-larger-OLED-display-replaceable-straps-and-7-days-of-battery-life.614663.0.html\" target=\"_self\" class=\"internal-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Vivosmart 5<\/a> (currently available for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Garmin-v%C3%ADvosmart%C2%AE-Fitness-Tracker-Long-Lasting\/dp\/B09VY63659?tag=nbcnewsnet-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" class=\"external-link-new-window\">$149.99<\/a> on Amazon) in 2022.\u00a0&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">It follows that Garmin&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/Garmin-wearable-gains-popular-Body-Battery-TrueUp-feature.1085244.0.html\" target=\"_self\" class=\"internal-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">approach<\/a> to stress assessment might differ from that of the EMA, thereby affecting the outcome of the experiment. &#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Nevertheless, the result is now being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/mobile\/your-smartwatchs-sleep-tracker-may-be-sleeping-on-the-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link-new-window\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">interpreted<\/a> as evidence that few if any wrist-worn smart devices are in any way accurate when it comes to the often popular spec of stress-tracking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/Notebookcheck-Team.212978.0.html?&amp;tx_nbc2journalist_pi1%5Bmode%5D=show&amp;tx_nbc2journalist_pi1%5Buid%5D=254\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/csm_deidre_ab91dfe312.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" alt=\"Deirdre O'Donnell\"\/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/Notebookcheck-Team.212978.0.html?&amp;tx_nbc2journalist_pi1%5Bmode%5D=show&amp;tx_nbc2journalist_pi1%5Buid%5D=254\" class=\"j_name\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deirdre O Donnell<\/a> &#8211;
